I guess when the fob breaks and they find the replacement is going to be £300 plus they think sod it and use the spare.

They can break. A lot of the times it's just the buttons losing contact with the circuit board inside. I replaced the shell on one of my astra fobs. Dead easy,cost about £15 and now all back working as it should.

The main damage i used to see when i worked at a garage was the blade coming off, wear of the buttons shown in pictures below and problems with the immobiliser.

There were 41.7 million licensed vehicles on our roads in 2024 there is always going to be plenty of work for a locksmith bearing in mind many of his call outs are not to broken keys they are to people who have manged to lock their keys in the car.

With Toyota keys, they're reprogrammable.
So if you get down to your final key, get one off a breaker. You just need the internals and they charge around £25 for them.

That's a good idea a 'blip only' spare.
Tbh the blade is not used that much.
