    Willy Wonka...

I find myself peeking at all the labelling like some sort of content nerd - hiding amongst the unloved and discarded detritus in the aisles with my hooded anorak firmly wrapped around my puzzled and empty little head. Perhaps I should go back to trainspotting (and that ain't a joke!).

    Phew .... it's a weird world ...

At this stage - not very scientific at all. Maybe later. All I want is a nice quiet slow but productive hobby that produces something vaguely drinkable at the end. And that teaches me a little patience.

    Phew .... it's a weird world ...

I guess this is where the phrase 'suck it and see' really comes into its own. Thanks, kind people. I'll consign the hydrometer to the 'nice but not necessary' drawer.

    Phew .... it's a weird world ...

Oh heck .... the more I read about hydrometers the less I want to use one. Temperature of room ... 60F/18(ish)C. Nope - no way that will happen. For various reasons this ol' house just doesn't get that cool. And I'm not about to get all technical with the formula for other ambient temps. Oh...

    Phew .... it's a weird world ...

Whoopsie - haven't taken a starting gravity. Can get the hang of the hydrometer thing. Readings are too close together. Is it possible to get one that's just for wine and is actually readable without a magnifying glass?

    Phew .... it's a weird world ...

So .... started a RGJ & Apple splosh based on WOW's. Used a yeast/nutrient mix from Wilko. Hmmmm .... it's going OK but is very busy. Fun and cheap and if it dies then there's not much lost. BUT! In another 1 gallon DJ I have some tea wine (without the Red Bush) and will, according to the...

    Wilko Wine Finings A and B 65g

Kwik Clear .... sounds just the jobbie. Thanks, Tau. :thumb:

    Wilko Wine Finings A and B 65g

Thanks, Tau. Will take look around for that. How long does the product stay good for once opened?

    Tesco

Distribution costs (fuel) are on the increase. Marmite jars are imported and their price will be hit by the low pound value. This won't just affect Tesco or Marmite. I'm pretty sure we'll see a lot of product prices creep up, especially glassware. Glad I bought in a stock of preserve jars...

    Tesco

Marmite .... food of the Gods. Pot noodles .... not even food.

    Wilko Wine Finings A and B 65g

Says on the sachet it's sufficient for 25 litres but I'm only making single 4.5 litre D/Js. So .... do I just use around a fifth of it and dump the rest? If that's the case I'll try and time two or three brews to be ready at the same time. Yeah - I know it's cheap enough stuff but the...

Tea wine ... with Red Bush tea bags

Thanks Tau. Have decided, however, to go for a straightforward old tea version. Maybe play with the Red Bush miles down the line when I have the least inkling of what I'm doing here. And drink the Red Bush whilst waiting. As tea in a white mug. :)

Tea wine ... with Red Bush tea bags

I did find a reference elsewhere to someone starting a red bush tea wine - they used the other name of Rooibos - but never discovered how it turned out.

Last dumb question (for a while)

Wine making - well, I hope it turns out as wine rather cleaning fluid. I rarely drink our tapwater straight but put it through a filter jug. Even the cat turns his nose up at tap water unless it's been left to moulder for a couple of days. (The water, that is, not the cat.) I have a 5...

Last dumb question (for a while)

Where I live has hard water. It almost comes out in lumps. For making gallon DJ's would I be better off using 5 litre bottles of spring water? I'm not talking cost, or about re-using the 5 litre plastic bottles, but whether the hardness of the water in this area (South Coast) has any...

Late to the party but ... Demijohns @ £5

If I could travel to where the goodies are and then transport them home I'd probably go hunting around for best price, but had to rely on a kindly shopper to do the biz on my behalf. And going off topic - I've since managed a visit to my nearest Wilkinsons and was pleasantly surprised at how...

Tea wine ... with Red Bush tea bags

Anyone have thoughts about using Red Bush in tea wine? Plus something else. I'm not so sure about the Red Bush but love the colour and taste and wonder if it would hold. Not too sure though so will probably use a mix of good old breakfast tea plus some Lady Grey and a bag of minty stuff.

    Noobie with a silly question

By the way .... I really don't like this Munton's Cherry stuff. Would probably be good for loo cleaner but the OH says he likes it! Wot! And I've been buying you nice stuff for years (wine, that is ...not loo cleaner ...) ...... pahhhhhhh! Think I might forget to seal it (the 'wine') and start...

    Noobie with a silly question

Racked off my first version of WOW today. It's very dry .... and very cloudy. It seems I chose some difficult stuff but hey-ho .... I used Aldi Rio Doro Apple, Aldi Rio Tropical, Iceland 100% squeezed tropical. Probably a wee bit tooooooo much juice in there? It went crazy for the first week...

Late to the party but ... Demijohns @ £5

Wilko / Wilkinsons are still offering 4.5ltr D/J's at £5. Picked up a couple more today, nice bit of Munton's branded kit.
