    Bittering Lesson needed.

I understand that higher alpha acids and a longer boil time make for more bittering, but by how much? is there a chart? I could use THBF calculator, problem is now I don't understand what 'Utilization' refers to :wha: :wha: :wha:

    Star San dosage.

If you mix up 5 litres of water, 8 ml of starsan in a syringe is easy to measure, even with my dodgy eyesight. Best not to splash onto fingers or into eyes when neat, I wear glasses and gloves. Oooops, sorry, just realised this advice has already been posted ....... that's my eyes again

Beer / Ales : How Long..........

Nice carpentry Dan ;) Brown glass is best. With green glass you'd need a darker room and clear glass is not recommended. Once bottled your beer should last ages but some forms of infection will shorten shelf life. I can't keep the beer long, it tastes good and doesn't last long! Though just...

    Clean Yeast

The chemistry aspect of brewing is a little daunting but yeast, for me, is probably the most complicated part.

    Clean Yeast

Is the US-05 a little harder to use than S-04? Must admit I found the S-04 very handy for the beginner. Though I comment on the taste .....yet.

    Ag - extract equivalents

As said, some recipies can't be converted but in many cases you can use cyrstal malt (as said) and about 3kg of DME or about 4kg of LME ...... hops remain the same. Vague but gives you a rough idea.

    Irish moss/whirlfloc

Am I right in thinking you should re hydrate and add to the last 15 mins of the boil ......... but does it go in loose and then need to be filtered out ????

    Brewery names for fun!

Well in cockney bird **** or bird lime = time, hence doing time (prison) is know as doing 'bird' ............ so Bird **** Brewery would be 'Time Brewery' :geek: :geek: :geek: :D :D :D I think :?

Sainsburys are doing these new 'Larger' Kits

Don't bother with the FV. It's a long off the quality of others. It's thin, it's small, there's no moulded handles and wire top handle is too thin. Also the lid (on mine anyway) won't snap down! Spend a bit more on a good one ;)

    Still no success but undaunted...

I'm sure it'll be good Jack :) As long as you've got sterile equipment and you leave the lid on it'll be fine.

    Imperial war Museum London

Tis brilliant the one in London, shame it's closed. I'm not sure when it re-opens ......... and it's only 5 mins from me in the Elephant :? Must admit, I didn't even know about the Manchester one. Great idea for fathers day though.

Growing hops "oop north" in Lancashire

And the sexing thing Hoppy? is it a matter of seeded or seedless stock?

Growing hops "oop north" in Lancashire

Hi Hoppy, How is that done? Also, London has mostly clay, is there a variety that'll thrive in that? Sorry to hijack the thread Colin

    partial extract/mini mash

Yes. so if your using say for eg, 300g of crystal malt and say 3kg of DME and 100g of hops in the first 10L boil you'd use 150g crystal malt, 1.5 DME, half the hops etc, add this to your FV then repeat with the next 10L of water ...... final topping up with water, cooling the whole thing down...
  16. Pjam

    partial extract/mini mash

You can do an extract brew with that pot :) or even do two 10 litre brews into one FV. (then top up with cold water) Your welcome to share my extract recipe ........ though I can't say how good it is yet.

Danstar Windsor Yeast Low Attenuation - Is this a bad thing?

No no, nothing at all to worry about. And nothing wrong with a beer at 3.5 abv, TBH I don't normally like strong beer. If I want something strong I drink whiskey.

    The Craft Beer Co.

Oh well. Staff in London Pubs/Resturants/shops etc are not very motivated. Comes from earning £1100 a month and having to pay £1000 a month in rent.

Danstar Windsor Yeast Low Attenuation - Is this a bad thing?

Just had a check, Danstar Windsor Yeast attenuation is 61%, which gives you a final gravity of 1018 and 3.7% abv. So your not far out :) It might do it bit more though .......... with a stir.

Danstar Windsor Yeast Low Attenuation - Is this a bad thing?

Andy, do you know the attenuation figure for the Windsor yeast? There's a calculator (top left) for just this situation. You fill in the attenuation figure and the OG, it'll give you the kinda final gravity you should expect :geek:
