Evening all, I was wondering,,,, do need to add irish moss or whirlfloc if the recipe (extract brew) calls for it, I don't really want to add it but what happens if i dont, ie. would it clear without it. thanks.

irsh moss/whirfloc clears a beer so its not cloudy - purely cosmetic and no effect on flavour. If your doing a dark beer like porter or stout you can dispense with it.

Am I right in thinking you should re hydrate and add to the last 15 mins of the boil ......... but does it go in loose and then need to be filtered out ????

Yes, I put about 3g in a 23l brew 10 mins before the end.
It ends up as a mass in the bottom of the FV.

Why don't you want to use it? I use Protofloc and it works out at about 4p a brew. It's made from seaweed so it's vegetarian (presumably vegan).

mainly because its my first attempt at using grains/hops and i am only doing a half batch, just in case its a flop. If it turns out good then it wont be around for long :drink: will use it next time on a full brew.....
