    Brewers Gold

I have an all-Brewers Gold Pale Ale in the keg right now. Very nice beer. Nicely fruity hop presence. I don't find that it needs a second hop.

Can you add too much water to a mash?

Actually adding excess water can affect mash pH if your strike water has much alkalinity. Look at it this way: If the grain has only so much acid content and that is balanced by adding an appropriate quantity of slightly alkaline water...adding extra alkaline water will drive the pH higher...

    Water Treatment and finings

The tip from Aleman is appropriate. That is a known water quality. However, don't go off and add minerals or acid unless you know what your water already has in it. You could be adding stuff you don't want or need. A water report can be very helpful. As a quick work-around, if you have...

    Brew Dogs TV show

I'm just watching the first episode now. San Diego. Its very well done. It is entertaining and those 2 Scots are funny.

    Question regarding water types?

I guarantee that GK does perform some sort of treatment to their water prior to brewing with it. One thing that is becoming very prevalent in breweries is RO or nanofiltration systems to reduce the overall mineralization in the water. Nanofiltration is used in most Anheuser Busch breweries and...

    Does copper kill yeast?

Some copper metal in your brewing system is a good addition. There have been many examples of breweries going 'all stainless' and then having problems with their brewing. The inclusion of minor copper components has been utilized to provide the trace copper content to the brewing water. One...

    Belle Saison Yeast Trial

Kegged that beer this afternoon after raising the temp to 85F for a couple of days. The final gravity was 0.998. Pretty dry! This recipe did include 10% cane sugar to help dry out the beer. The OG was 1.065 so this beer will pack a modest punch. The yeast is a trooper, but it appears that...

    Belle Saison Yeast Trial

I am also fermenting a Saison with that yeast. We will see how it tastes in the next few days. The aroma from the blow-off tube was inviting, so I am looking forward to the tasting.

    Plasticky taste first AG.

Hopefully you were dechlorinating your water prior to brewing with it. All public water supplies in most countries are disinfected to protect the public. Any chlorine or chloramine in the tap water will instantly combine with compounds in the malt and create chlorophenols that can be medicinal...

    Atlanta beer #4 - Sweetwater 420

Travelers to the US that pass through Atlanta can visit the Sweetwater taproom in the airport. I don't recall which concourse its in. That brewery has many fine beers. 420 is certainly one of my favorites.

    Adjusting tap water

+1 on what Wasabi mentions. The pH rise after boiling is typically due to driving off the CO2 which reduces the amount of carbonic acid in the water.

    Adjusting tap water

Excessive alkalinity in tap water used to reconstitute extracts can consume the acidity you are counting on for balance. Neutralizing all or most of that alkalinity may be appropriate. But recognize that this may only be solving one problem. If the water is full of other ions, that might...

Bru'n Water - mash and sparge water Total Water Additions

The water quality needs of mashing and sparging water can be quite different. If you were brewing a light lager, then maybe the water qualities would be similar. But for many other styles, the water qualities can be different (its just the alkalinity that differs). Therefore, treating all...

    Starsan water suitability

I think you are going to find that StarSan clouds up fairly quickly in that water. I'd say that anything above 5 ppm Ca is likely to cloud up. It will still work as a sanitizer for immediate use, but I find that it becomes slimey after a couple of days when its cloudy.

    Starsan water suitability

    That is brilliant.
  17. mabrungard

    Starsan water suitability

StarSan reacts with calcium in water and forms the cloudiness. The issue of excessive alkalinity in the water only means that additional StarSan is required to produce the necessary low pH, so you don't HAVE to use very low alkalinity water. To solve both problems (Ca and alkalinity), using...

    Using activated carbon

Then it must be powdered activated carbon that is suspended in water. You may need to filter it.

    Using activated carbon

Was that Granular Activated Carbon or Powdered Activated Carbon? If it was GAC, did you prewash the carbon to remove the carbon dust (PAC) before adding it to your beer? You may have to filter it out.
