    Suitable Pumps

At that price I could probably afford 2 and have the whole brewery at one level. That would be quite nice. It's just more to clean isn't it!! How do you keep your pump and tubing clean and sanitised? Do you rinse with boiling water and then sanitise tubing in the usual way? It does add...

    Suitable Pumps

Looks great, Wendy! Are they self-priming? It is right on budget too! :D

    Suitable Pumps

Thanks for the replies guys. How do you have to prime the Totton then?

    Suitable Pumps

Hello! Okay - replanning part of the brewery design after finding out the garage isn't high enough to accomodate my 3-tier design (plus FV) at bottom. So - will be adding a pump between the Mash Tun and the boiler, which raises questions: 1. What is the most effective and reasonably-priced...

    Barrell not compleatly clean

I must admit, I do have indentations in my rubber seals a lot of the time and have changed them a few times. I don't use a towel to tighten, but do hand tighten and I guess even then I am doing it too tight. Will need to revisit my technique!

St. Peters Ruby Red Kegged - Tom Caxton Dark Ale On!

Ah! The signature is out of date. The Scottish Heavy went wrong! Left it on the yeast for too long and it ended up VERY sulphury. Re-using the yeast cake is easy and the first step in getting several generations of use out of a batch. Syphon the beer off leaving just a bit of the...

St. Peters Ruby Red Kegged - Tom Caxton Dark Ale On!

Just kegged my St. Peter's, which will be saved for Xmas and have put my Tom Caxton's straight onto the yeast cake, which is White Labs 005 (British Ale). The yeast cake smells fab! :thumb: Used the usual mix of 500g demerrera and 500g light spraymalt to make up the fermentables. Let's hope...

    Barrell not compleatly clean

Having just read the last post on this thread, I think I might have a barrel problem ALL the time. When a barrel is working correctly, should the beer just flow out continuously? Most of mine come out VERY slowly and you hear bubbling sounds in between small outpourings of beer. It looks...

    Green apple juice!

I make cider from supermarket juice at the moment, but REALLY want to press my own, especially after seeing it in action at an Apple Day last week. To be honest, it might be worth doing two small batches for comparison: 1 demijohn (1 Gallon) with just the juice, and 1 with one mug of...

St. Peters Ruby Red - Stuck Brew?

Thanks for the replies! Ah! I gave it a 'good' stir last night, with a cooking spoon, although this was a rapid stir that got everything moving round quite fast, I didn't change direction or churn it so I shouldn't have re-aerated it. That wouldn't be good! I am going to take another reading...

St. Peters Ruby Red - Stuck Brew?

A little - up to about 18.5C in the day, and down to 16C at night, but I have a heat belt on it for the night. I might have accidentally left it on in the day too recently though. Do you think I have killed my yeast?

St. Peters Ruby Red - Stuck Brew?

Hello! I have a St. Peter's Ruby Red on the go, but the damn thing seems to be stuck. This hasn't happened to me before. Started it on Friday and swapped the yeast it came with for White Labs WLP005 British Ale yeast. I did notice that this hadn't quite mixed properly and quite a big blob...

    DRIED YEAST PRICE HIKE!

As far as I understand, there is a limit of 4 generations before it starts to get iffy, BREW 1: Pitch into Keg BREW 2: Pour new wort onto yeast cake from Brew 1 BREW 3: Clean yeast from Brew 2 to remove dead ones and split into two starters BREW 4: Same again - clean and split into two starters...

    Cleaning Barrel Tap

Okay - I have had my first brewing disaster and have a barrel of REALLY awful tasting beer. Almost like poo. I assume I have an infection, but am SOOOOOO anal about my cleaning that I am not sure where it came from. UNTIL I realised I have never cleaned the inside of the tap. Question is -...

    DRIED YEAST PRICE HIKE!

Liquid yeast does indeed seem much more reasonable. Whatever I brew with, I will be going a good 3 generations with it in future! I have 6 packs of dried yeast now, which I will do at least 2 brews each with. The idea is that at the end of those brews I want my first batch (or two) of AG brew...

    DRIED YEAST PRICE HIKE!

I just went to my Homebrew shop to stock up on some dried yeasts, as trying to save money now and can't afford as much liquid yeast. TO MY HORROR  - Nottingham, Safale-S04 and Windsor have all been put up from £1.79 to £3.59! Apparently the suppliers have doubled prices suddenly in...

    Barrell not compleatly clean

Clean with very hot water and some oxy cleaner, and then sterilise with Milton fluid (food-safe) with a higher concentration of 15 whole caps for the full barrel. Leave for 20 minutes or so then rinse as normal. Should be fine.

New guy needs some vimto help

Hey Simon! Sorry, I haven't forgotten your yeast, I've just been really poorly. Back on my feet now so will post in the next day or two.

New guy needs some vimto help

To be honest, I would let anything in the DJ finish fermenting. Yeast carry out a complex job, but put a lot of effort into clearing up after themselves before they go to sleep. Interrupting this process can have a negative impact on the final outcome of the brew. I happen to love dry cider...

New guy needs some vimto help

Hi! The only thing about using the steriliser in the airlock, is that if it is sucked into the DJ then it could interfere with the yeast, although there will only be a bit. Now that I have run out of the cheap vodka (I don't normally drink it so only bought it for brewing!) I am going to use...
