    Beer carbonation

unfortunately I don't have fridge space to cold crash my bottling bucket or fermenter

    Beer carbonation

My priming technique is; 1. measure the sugar using scales after judging the amount using an online calculator. usually between 130g and 150g for 23l of beer. I like it slightly above average carbonation 2. Boil about 500ml of water and dissolve the sugar making sure not to burn it. 3. Let the...

    Beer carbonation

Anyone got any opinions as to weather the capper caped bottles might be leaking a bit of carbonation vs the german swing tops?

    Beer carbonation

Very interesting reply. Things tend to be the temperatures they are ambiently. I have not made any effort on the front other than to make sure fermentation and bottling is at room temperature. I had not considered that the fermentation length and bottle conditioning length would affect the...

    Beer carbonation

Hi all, I posted recently about a batch of beer that I made that was over carbonated. I have a related question. I just did a beer and I used the same amount of priming sugar for the batch as all my previous beers. It was bottle conditioned in german style flip top bottles. This beer was over...

    Recapping overcarbonated beers

Thanks for the info folks. I based on the cautious answers I have gotten, I think I will just drink them over carbonated. I like the jug suggestion but I don't have a decent glass jug for that purpose. Thanks again

    Recapping overcarbonated beers

Hi all, This may sound like a stupid question but... I have bottled a batch of homebrew in german style swing tops. The beer is very tasty but a bit over carbonated for my taste. Lesson learned for next time but I am wondering, any reason why I can't pop all of the tops to let a bit of the...

    Free bottles

Hi all, I have just done a bit of a stock take of my bottle collection and I have too many now, so I would like to give some away. I have approx 30x330ml free to a good home. I live in NW London. The nearest tube station is Preston Road for reference. I will trip over these for about a week...

Using a steam cleaner to sanitise bottles

It's tempting. The batch I am bottling today is in german style flip top bottles with have plastic tops on so it won't work for that. The next lot will be in regular reused commercial bottles, so I will be tempted to try it for that in a few weeks.

Using a steam cleaner to sanitise bottles

This is making me think my steamer won't have enough power to do an adequate job. I have no idea of the temps it produces but I also don't have a thermometer for testing so I think that idea is maybe out of the question. Thanks for this very accurate information. Time to buy a fountain...

Using a steam cleaner to sanitise bottles

Hi all, I have a bottling day today and would like to try to speed up the process with using steam to sanitise my bottles. They will already be clean at that point. I don't have a fast acting cleaner like Starsan, just the old fashioned stuff that takes at least 10 minutes contact time. x40...

Yeast floculation and choice of yeast

Thanks you all very much for your input. I am going to go with the gv12 for the next few batches to see how that turns out. I will consider finings in due course, but I don't think I have the knowledge to make informed decisions on that one just yet.

Yeast floculation and choice of yeast

I am taking care when pouring and I am leaving at least 1 inch in the bottom. When I go to clean the bottle, I swirl up the beer thats left and I comes out looking like chocolate milk shake because of the disk on the bottom. The overly yeastlyness was with all the kits I have tried. The...

Yeast floculation and choice of yeast

I can add that I don't have the facilities to cold crash or use any techniques that go beyond the basic tools. I also can't comment on what yeasts were used in the kits as the packages had no specific labels

Yeast floculation and choice of yeast

Thank you all for the fast and informed opinions that I have come to expect here. I will be giving the notty a go for my next batch going on this week. As for the whole process. I imagine mine is fairly basic; 1, Get the brew going with good sanitisation and I hydrate the yeast when pitching...

Yeast floculation and choice of yeast

Hi all, I am currently on my 4/5th batch of home brew. I am brewing from kits with the yeast provided but I have decided that my next progression in brewing is going to be learning more about yeast strains and choosing my own while still brewing from kits. My main problem so far is that I am...

Newby questions about levels of yeast in bottles

Thanks for all the info. I am not familiar with cold crashing. I don't think I have the facilities to do that in summer, but in winter, I can certainly make use of the garage. I am using the yeast that comes with the kits. I have done a couple of Young's and a couple of Festival kits. I am...
