The final candidates for the Tory leadership race have been confirmed [POLL]

My vote is for Johnson, without any hesitation. Only one reason. He is such a repellent character. Totally obnoxious, a liar when it suits him, a portrayer of any political idea if it seems expedient. an absolute chancer and charlatan. Therefore, the perfect Tory leader. If Johnson is...

    Yeast confusion

Well, if you're only on your 12th AG brew, then for me the biggest thing is to find a yeast that you're really happy with. By that, I mean: A: It produces a beer that you really like. It might be very clean, or it might have estery/banana strong yeast flavours. Or something inbetween. It...

    Storage of grains

Well here's a surprise - there's a lot of the above that I don't agree with!! For me, malt does go off, especially if stored in warm conditions, and pre-crushed malt goes off even quicker. In my experience, it is not like an On/Off switch. Malt very gradually deteriorates. Yes, you can make...

Can I Lager in a corny keg?

Excellent plan - I always worry that beer in a plastic drum/carboy might get a bit oxidised if left too long. The obvious downside is that lagering takes a while, so doing it in cornies means that you will need quite a lot of cornies - potentially expensive!

Sanitising - How anal about it are you?

I think I once read that brewing is 10% about making beer, and 90% about washing, cleaning, sterilising and sanitising. Maybe an exaggeration, but it often feels that way. Basically sanitising is a bum job - so I suppose I am anal about it... :coat:

    The extra mile...

Ah, what a weird coincidence - I've just been describing on another thread the last trip to the vet of my 4 year old dog. Truly horrible. I have to say, though, that when my children were young I deliberately encouraged them (well we all participated, really!) to have short-lived pets...

    Mans best friend

I don't think it's that simple, Clint. From my experience then, yes, all dogs I've known have an instinct to guard and hunt - and this can be modified if you bring them up from pups. It will still be there, but you can either stimulate it or depress it, depending upon how you train the young...

    Mans best friend

Ah, I wish that was true. But it isn't. Depending upon your definition of "bad", I guess. As far as I know, no dog has tried to exterminate millions of Jews, or set up a Stalinist Gulag system for anyone who disagreed with them. Obviously, dogs are only capable of operating on a smaller scale...

    May resigns.

Hmmm.. I'm not so sure. As far as I can see, Trump is a total charlatan. Also, not really very intelligent - a one-trick pony ("everyone who challenges me is FAKE or CORRUPT. Ignore them or lock them up!" Surely this repetitive diatribe is going to wear thin at some stage. It did with...

    Watering down beer

Exactly how do you know it is 6.5% - what measurements suggest this? As Drunkula says, it's a big difference from 4 -4.5% ABV. Diluting it will obviously reduce the percentage alcohol, but it will certainly also reduce the body, and the flavour as well. Sitting on the yeast for a long time...

    Dilute or leave it?

Nope. There cannot possibly be. You say you started out with 6 litres (presumably the total amount of water in the mashtun), and then sparged with 1 - 1.5l . So potentially a total volume of between 7 - 7.5l after sparging. Maybe not, because there may have been deadspace (i.e. volume lost) in...

    CO2 Supply in Dundee/Perthshire

Out of interest, what were you quoted? I use Hobbyweld (presently in Dumfries, formerly in Portree) & the lack of a rental charge seems to make it quite economical. I'm not totally sure, but I think my last 6kg cylinder cost about £30 (but they last for ages).

    Wort cooling

I've never chilled, and the only problem I've ever had is gauging the bitterness from late hop additions. I boil my wort in a Buffalo "tea shop" boiler. Once the boil is finished, I pull a black bin-bag over the top of the boiler and pull it fairly tight around the bottom of the boiler. No...

    Dilute or leave it?

Well, then. All it does is make the maths a tiny bit more complicated. Basically, you're just combining the volume of a cone with the volume of a cylinder above it. Oh, bugger, just not worth it is it! asad. Just dilute the thing a bit & enjoy the product acheers.
  16. Hoppyland

    Dilute or leave it?

I'd say dilute. But how much .......? You don't know your initial volume, and fermentation is now vigorous by the sounds of it, so you can't dilute to a specific OG. Your 6l + maybe 1.5l would presumably be reduced a lot by loss during the boil. So, where does that leave us? What I would do is...

    Hop loss

I'm not convinced that we all do. A lot of my beers (kegged or bottled) seem to keep their quality for a very long time - even if big-time hopped. I have no really positive proof with my own beers, but my "informed guess" is that oxygen is the culprit. I use Hobbyweld 6kg CO2 cylinders, and...

    Hi from Inverness

Welcome! Your setup sounds excellent! Looks though I'm about to move back to Skye, after staying in SW Scotland for over 3 years. Can't wait to get back north!

    Whirlpooling Alternative

I'm not sure why you'd want to leave it in a lot longer. Are you assuming that a constant, quite high, water velocity will have a huge effect on extraction? I'm not sure. I don't continually stir my teapot when making tea. If I did would it be hugely different? Dunno, really - but I tend...

New England yeast at The Malt Miller

Well, I've never used this yeast. However, I'd reckon that the ester ("fruity") production is probably influenced far more by the fermentation temperature than by the pitching rate. If you want "fruity", then ramp up your fermentation temp to the max recommend for this yeast & you should get...
