    Weights and measures

They don't necessarily measure ABV of beer by OG/FG. It's usually done in the lab. Where it is done by og/FG it must be audited frequently by a lab where if it is found that it is consistently understated, you'll be in trouble. I imagine spirits are always done in the lab. All here under 12...

    Grain prices creeping up.

Commodity costs are set globally. E.g if the equilibrium price of barley is $100 dollars a tonne, it is that globally and not regionally. E.g. a UK supplier will export grain if there is excess demand elsewhere. So Brexit can be blamed to the extent it impacted $/£. Supply is down because of the...

    Grain prices creeping up.

Energy prices are the biggest con of all, and we are all (consumers, businesses etc) being screwed over, for the reasons you mention. I do believe malt is a more functional market. Some (Crisp I'm looking at you) have massively hiked prices, others are around inflationary. Consumers therefore...

Is Tesco Ashback water still a good option?

Spotless without additions would be the worst option, as there is no calcium or magnesium which the yeast needs (although some will come out of the grain). Ashbeck is probably the best of the three unadjusted, although you may still need to adjust with acid for the mash depending on your grist...

    Why are my beers dark?

Jury is out. The marginal difference in cost is why I use them. Brimming the bottle is the best defense against oxidation, but bottle at room temperature if doing this to avoid bottle bombs (or do the PET squeeze method suggested above).

    Why are my beers dark?

I'm not sure how good they are, but I use oxygen scavenging caps on the occasions that I bottle. They are basically the same price as normal caps

    Oakham Citra Mini Documentary

Keen to watch this. Peterborough is my home town, so drank a lot of Oakham ales in my beer drinking formative years.

Either that or they are caramelising on the bottom of the pan.

    Grain prices creeping up.

That is correct. And the suppliers would have to make a judgement on the wording of the tax manual. IMO, they are in the clear, even if the end customer is a homebrewer because of the precise wording. I do however sympathise with the grumbles of the retailers who are compelled to add VAT like...

    Grain prices creeping up.

I know less about VAT law, but enough about pensions law to know that the tax manuals are to be treated literally. And this one is definitely one of the clearer examples. For VAT to be payable, the malt would have to be retail packed. A pallet load of grain sold to the co-op would not meet...

    Grain prices creeping up.

No minimum, subject to the bags being 25kg, and 5kg for hops. And you don't have to be a business. A few on here have used them.

I was quoted £15 + VAT DHL next day, but I pick it up as my parents are in Peterborough. On 50kg

No, flour and bread are zero rated.

    Grain prices creeping up.

It's like working dog food. No VAT on this but VAT on normal dog food. It's why half the dog food in the shop is labeled for working dogs.

    Grain prices creeping up.

Rules are here. https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/vat-food/vfood9000 I'd argue that a 25kg sack is not a retail pack, but probably safer for the seller to charge/pay it anyway.

    Grain prices creeping up.

It's gone from £21 to £25 for me at BS, so a bit more than inflation. CO2 was a genuine concern just over a year ago, I couldn't find anyone to sell me any!

I see, I thought it was only charged when it was repackaged for homebrewers.

There's at least competition in the malt market. You could move from Crisp to Baird's or Fawcett to save a tenner. (Also there's no VAT on sacks of malt as it's a foodstuff)

    Klarstein Mundschenk

Got a question about mashing in in all in ones in general. Shall I still heat mash strike water separately, so I go water, grain, water, grain etc, rather than having to add the grain to the entire water which is more difficult to mix. Also, people saying the bazooka is bad on these version...
