    Hop mashing

Brulosophy did a real world experiment involving hopping of beer. Not a science based one using very sophisticated laboratory equipment to measure nano gram quantities of substances. Essetially wort was made and two beers were made from it using exactly the same conditions. The only difference...

    Hop mashing

Having worked in scientific research for 35 years I know there is a mountain of total ******** out there and some genuine research. Scientists will take money to research any old **** to keep themselves employed. Other will propose using a hobby to create a scientific study for a thesis. Some...

    Hop mashing

Home brewing is not a hobby... it simply has to be a science! Home brewing the new HiFi spend a shed load on trying to achieve something that most people cannot detect.

    Grainfather Electric Grain Mill

I can see both sides here. The thing is someone has to do the grain crushing and their service does not come free.

    Grainfather Electric Grain Mill

In real terms malt has to be just about the cheapest ingredient in brewing so best to pay

    Grainfather Electric Grain Mill

£34.89 is a good price for Simpsons MO Yesterday I paid €47or £39.61 for a 25kg sack... mind you I suppose they had to get it here first. I cannot buy from the UK anymore far too complex and costly. I used to buy lots of stuff from the UK per Brexit!

    IPA using Voss ?

I think each to their own method. I use Verdant IPA for most of my bitter, pale ale, IPA and ESB brews. It forms a huge head in the fermenter a bit like the yeast used by Sam Smiths and I stir it in every day. I usually take a crop of yeast on the second day and fermentation is usually finished...

    IPA using Voss ?

Why not? Very top fermenting I want to get all the yeast down into the beer then make a top crop when it come back up again to use next time. Sam Smiths Yorkshire square frementation vessels are mixed regularly during fermentation.

    Hop mashing

Could be rubbish but the report I saw said it was a way of getting greater utilisation of hops but using the same hops to bitter the beer? Should have added that was the original reasoning they did not really know about half of the stuff modern truth seekers are harping on about.

    Hop mashing

It is said to be an old method so there is nothing new about it. Maybe something a craft brewer has ressurected?

    IPA using Voss ?

Well at atmospheric pressure and at 35C Lallemand say two to three days to complete fermentation. Though someone on her says that fermentation is still not complete at the point where the gravity is stable and there is no more sugar to break down. You have to leave it for a good bit longer...

    IPA using Voss ?

Well I will be starting to cool prior to conditioning soon . I will let you know if the fermentation did produce notes of Orange but this is a 53 IBU IPA made with Columbus,Cascade, Mosaic and Citra I think I wil be hard pressed to find it :D

    IPA using Voss ?

I use a fridge and ink birds for my temperature control for fermenting, conditioning and for storage so everything is at the correct temperature. On the Voss, well it is said by Lallemand to be best between 25 and 40C with the sweet spot between 35 and 40C . I had been warned that at the higher...

    Hops pellet or flowers/cones

I have always used hop cones for my brews but I must say I did find I lost a bit of brewhouse eff using them. I then read so much about the advantages for using pellets I have decided to use what I have left of my cones and have bought in a load of pellets, the do take up a lot less space in...

    IPA using Voss ?

So Voss fermenting IPA. My first try at Voss for anything and I wanted to brew an IPA. I had warning of overly orangey notes in the finished beer and with this in mind I fermented at 26 C which worked nicely because the ground water here is already at 19C difficult to get it cooler using the...

    Using older grain

I made a Pilsner back in April using Dingemans pilsner and 18% Weyermanns Munich II . It is drinking well now and it has made a really nice Pilsner but I used Perle, Spalter and Saaz instead of my usual Perle,Hersbrucker and Saaz and it is just a touch softer but the colour and the head is...
