How long will bried hops keep for

When I first started all grain the guy at my LHBS told me that once opened, they'll keep for about 6 months in the fridge. I seem to remember someone on here saying that their strength fades over time, but to what extent I'm unsure. I have a packet of Chinook that seems to be never ending...

    First taste of beer

I can't remember my first taste of beer, but I remember my dad buying my my first pint in the workies club (age 16). It was Cameron's Trophy. You could only get it in the East Durham area as far as I know. It used to be brewed at the old Nimmo Brothers Brewery in Castle Eden about 2 miles from...

    Transfer from boiler to fv

Did you have the lid on during that 3 hours? I no chill my wort so it's transfered to a sealed FV and left overnight to cool. it'll be fine. :thumb:

    Any idea what this is?

It's probably not that clear from the picture, actually, but I was talking about the white thing floating in the middle of it. Kind of looks a bit like a cobweb. It usually goes a bit cloudy, but I haven't seen any strange floaters before.

    Infection??

I'd rack it to the keg leaving the crusty looking stff behind. Having a taste will be your best indicator I suppose. Have you taken a gravity reading? I think if there's an infection it may well ferment lower than expected. Hope it turns out ok!

    Fermentation fridge woes!

My next question was going to be where to position the fan. Are they on all the time or just when heating/cooling kicks in?

    Any idea what this is?

I had a couple of 2L bottles of water left over from my last brew so though I'd use it to mix up some fresh Starsan yesterday. Today it has this in it. I've never come across this before. Is it normal?

    Fermentation fridge woes!

Great advice as ever, gents, thanks. Time for another little DIY project I think. :thumb:

    Fermentation fridge woes!

That's not something I'd really though about to be honest. What sort of fan would you go for? Maybe a 12V PC fan or similar?

Would you buy a beer with weed in it?

"Cannabis not only belongs in beer, it's the responable thing to do" I'm not sure I'd agree with him there, but when in Rome (or Colorado) I'd be curious as to what flavours it would impart if nothing else. I've always preferred a toke on the crack pipe with my beer though. P.s that last...

    Fermentation fridge woes!

Thanks for the replies gents. I've figured out the problem, and it's basically that I'm an *****! For whatever reason, I haven't stuck the temp probe into the FV this time like I usually do! The Inkbird heading and cooling differentials were also both set to 0.5°C so it was cycling...

    Fermentation fridge woes!

I'm on my 3rd brew since I gt my fridge/inkbird up and running. The first 2 were fine. Held at 19 for 2 weeks no problem. There's a pale ale in there now, again set to 19°C but the temp is fluctuating between 17.5 and 20.5. It seems that the heater kicks in brings it up to 19, then...

    Cold crash a porter?

I tend to cold crash everything now, regardless of style. I think it's more force of habit than anything though!

GrainFather Brew Day #19 - Doom Bar?

I'm quite partial to a Doombar so I might have a crack at this myself. I hope you manage to get your efficiency problems sorted!

Ever had trouble with no rinse sanitiser?

I use star san and swear by it. However, my last couple of brews have formed what looked like a pelicle on top. They were both fine as I just siphoned from underneath and left it behind. I noticed a couple of marks in the inside of the fermenter last time I used it, and those marks had mould...

Just noticed you're in Teesside hoptoit. I'll give you a shout when my fans break down!

    Steam extractor

That's looking like it might be the best option. The only thing that really lead me toward inlines is that's what The Electric Brewery and a few big *** (20gal) home brewers in the US use. And it's going straight out of the all so very minimal ducting involved. However, as you can tell my...
