Rumour? is Wilko's going into administration?

That's surely a tiny part of their business? Local branch here still open, but the shelves have been embarrassingly bare for a while now, they look like a dead man walking.

It's that time again-best place to buy grains for delivery?

I just rang the place Galena links to. Delivery killed it for me, put the price of a bag of pale Planet malt up to £46. I asked for a price the other day in my local homebrew shop, and they said they'd do me a bag for £48. For the sake of a couple of quid, I might as well support my local shop.

It's that time again-best place to buy grains for delivery?

Yes, Rod, I am, thanks. Although I'd prefer a common or garden base malt, or MO, rather than an extra pale.

It's that time again-best place to buy grains for delivery?

So, VAT controversy aside, where are we with current prices? Get 'Er Brewed seem to have bog-standard Crisp Best Ale at around 45 quid, plus about seven quid carriage. Is that about as good as it gets these days?

What are you drinking tonight 2023.

I dry-hopped some of my last batch of my Flakey bitter. Having drunk the d-h earlier, I'm now drinking the vanilla. The dry-hopped was OK, but an experiment I won't repeat. The hops in the original were just fine.

    90 min mash

All that alpha and beta is past my pay-grade! :D But because my method is crude and basic, I always do 90 mins mash FWIW, and generally get around 68-72% BHE, so happy with that.

The 'Recommend me a TV series' thread

I'm liking Poker Face (Sky Max/Showcase), good fun in the mould of the Fargo TV series. Great guest stars, too!

What are you drinking tonight 2023.

Exploratory pint of my Flakey bitter. Last batch was well below par, for some reason, but this looks back to form. Only bottled 15 days, wouldn't normally touch it this early, but as part of the batch is in clear bottles, I was encouraged by its crystal-clear appearance. And yes, it's absolutely...

'Flakey' bitter (with flaked barley) Grey Sheep bitter, oatmeal stout, and, of course, parsnip stout! :D

    Competition Schedule 2023

I wouldn't reveal whether I'd used water chemistry or not. Even if I had. It's up to the judges to judge your beer; why put preconceptions in their heads?

    What did you brew today?

A small batch simple pale ale today. While back I made three pale ales*, all the same grain bill and yeast, differing only by the hops used (although I did try for a fairly constant IBU figure). this time I swapped 250 g of the base malt out for wheat malt, to see what that will bring to the...

    What did you brew today?

    One for the bikers

Bikes were my primary form of transport for years, and I've virtually never not had a bike on the road since I was 25, and I'm in my early 70s now. And I still have my 748; I fired it up today for the first time in months, and it started on the button, and I hope to get out on it tomorrow. But I...

    Priming bottles with a syringe

Well, I don't really care what calculators say. Nor am I interested in "vols of CO2". I just want an amount of sugar that gives me the level of carbonation I like for a given style. And, as I said upthread, different brewing methods must have their effect. But I am a little surprised that some...

    Priming bottles with a syringe

It seems moot to discuss the minutia of how we calculate priming, when we have little common ground on what the actual amount of sugar could/should be. I look at the last couple of posts, and I think, 7 g per litre, 3.5 g per bottle? That's not even in the ball-park as far as I'm concerned. But...

    Priming bottles with a syringe

Agree with the above; I always allow for a few extra 'doses'. If anyone needs any 5 ml syringes, I have a few of them....

    Protests.

I don't like or support what they did, but I think once you start sending non-violent protestors to prison, you are setting a dangerous precedent.

In my opinion 5 live (21/4)

I went to a cinema in London last weekend, and was delighted to see a "No Food in the Auditorium" sign. More of this kind of thing! Of course, half the trouble is, the cinema chains make half their profit on popcorn.

    Help with Pale clarity

I agree with the posters upthread: if perfect clarity is important to you, I'd forget about dry-hopping.
