Was it named after John Wayne?
Fort Wayne, Indiana is named after General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, the city was founded in 1794 by Captain Jean François Hamtramck, who named it after the general

My favorite brewpub is Mad Anthony brewing.
The local honebrew club is MASH Fort Wayne homebrew club: MadAnthonySerioushHomebrewers
Be more exciting if it was named after Bruce Wayne and they had a Batcave and one of those bat lights in the sky and a host of mad villains to round up.
Or...even named after Indiana Jones. They could run tours round a fake German occupied castle with some motorbike and side car chases,some goes in a half track or panzer tank culminating in discovering the lost Ark of the Covenant..they'd be going mad for it.

We got voted the world's most livable city 7 times in a row. I think we all like where we live but the downside Melbourne is also one of the worlds most expensive cities.

Plenty of that here. We pass through a major wetlands on our way to my wife's doctor appointments.
And plenty of wooded areas.
What are the breweries and homebrew shops like?

Closest homebrew shop is 70 miles away, although there is a hardware store closer that has a small selection.

There's also a cidery in town and 3 or 4 brewpubs within a 30 minute or less drive.

Downside of US is that public transport is often non existent, or at least that is my impression - what is public transport like in Fort Wayne?

It varies quite a bit. Unfortunately it's only so-so in Fort Wayne.
When we lived in Portland, Oregon it was fantastic. We lived without a car for over three years.

Yeah, realise it is a big generation and the thing us Brits find it hard to get our heads around is the scale of the US. Would love to go to Portland. Boston is my favourite of the US cities I've been to.
