I have moved all the off topic posts from the retirement thread into this one.

The Baron answered a members question "Who was the milk snatcher"

It was a song from the Wizard of Oz and was "Ding Dong the wicked witch is dead" I think it was sung by the Munchkins in the film

Written by Michael Portillo.

Kind of like having an article by Joseph Goebells on how Hitler was exactly what Germany needed.

Speaking of Germany, the retirement age was thought up by Bismarck in the 1880's.
The catch was the average life span in 1880's Germany was 61.
Even if you managed to get to retirement age you weren't to live very long after.

Reckon Otto and Maggie would have gotten on pretty well.

If it wasn't for Thatcher Britain would be somewhere between the Czech Republic and Hungary instead of the power house it is today. Socialism does not, and will not work, which is the way Britain was heading, the same path which Jeremy Corbyn would be leading you down today had he got into power.

Retirement is what you make it, pay into private super funds from an early age and retire early and debt free.

Between Hungary & the Czech Republic?
On top of Slovakia?

I think you have made your views on Socialism very clear in previous posts.

In relation to Maggie,
the mines were probably doomed to close but the way she handled it was un-necessarily cruel.
Her policy in Northern Ireland probably lenghtened the Troubles.

I think laughing stock describes us better.
If we are so bad why is it that so many EU and Commonwealth economic migrants chose/choose to come and live here rather than stay in their own country, and others risk their lives trying to get onto our shores.
And at least you can more or less say what you want here without being rounded up and put into a 'correction' camp, most people have a reasonable basic standard of living, like it or not there are safeguards which protect individual 'rights' , we have a NHS which despite some failings caters reasonably well for all our health needs, and importantly we have a democratic political system which isn't rigged by the authorities or run by a corrupt dictator. I could go on.

OK ...but apart from: freedom of speech, good living standards, protected rights, a national health service, and democracy,

...what has the UK ever done for us!?

My laughing stock comment was posted with a large portion of my tongue in my cheek but having said that the Brexit debacle was a fine example of this.

To answer your point above about the EU and Commonwealth migrants coming here its because they are under the impression the pavements here are lined with gold and to them they probably are, wages here are several times that of their own countries so they can live here and send money back to their families why wouldn't they want to come here.
