History doesn't lie, and if she was so unpopular how come she lasted 15 years in the job?

One way was changing the county boundaries we used to be in Lancashire she moved us into Cumbria a move a lot of us still resent.

State controlled media, disinformation, putting the blame on the plebs (workers) and shifting the political focus from harsh realities to jingoistic hoorah henry "weathering the storm" "darkest hour" "do it for England" bullsh*t".

Like we have now really acheers.

Goes on all the time, fortunately most people can see through that, just as most people could see nothing but doom and gloom should Corbyns labor party had got in. And it gave the conservatives a resounding victory, for an unpopular party they certainly manage to win elections. Or maybe they are just unpopular on this forum.

I don't believe all left leaning politics should be branded socialism, as much as all capitalist politics should be branded fascism.

Erm, Fascism and capitalism are polar opposites. I know lefties like to yell 'facist' at everything and everyone who is to the right of them, but that really just shoes their ignorance. Facism is the one party state controlling everything, often with a jolly mix of nationalism, racism and human rights abuses thrown in. If you want confirmation of this, have a read of Hitler's thoughts on Capitalism (which he thought was a Jewish plot).

So although calling all left wing people socialists is lazy and inaccurate, calling capitalists fascists is as moronic as calling the Spice Girls jazz musicians.

a) Arguably Rule 1 has been broken several times particularly when members were discussing Thatcher
1. Please post in a mature, sensible and respectful manner.
b) And, as I have been told in the past on several occasions, when the thread gets so far off the original subject it is closed by the Mods. I haven't seen anything in the last 2.5 pages or so out of 4 pages about retirement, just a discussion on Thatcher and politics.

Well i voted for her back in 79 my first vote.!!!
10 yrs later i drunk a bottle of champers when her own party kicked her out and we all got rid.

I think Chippys moderation is about right.!!
We all have differing memories depending where we come from.

They're pretty interlinked, but if censorship is your thing go ahead and delete it.
If folks want to get talking about mostly unrelated topics at length relative to an original post, there is no reason why they can't start a new topic themselves, as any member can do.
So in this particular case two new independent threads could have been started, perhaps
- The Legacy of Thatcherism - Good or Bad?
- The Merits of Left or Right Politics in 21st Century UK
That way the usual suspects could go into a huddle and discuss at length their personals brand of politics without any fear of censorship provided they 'stayed within the forum rules', and then that allows the majority remainder to choose to participate or completely ignore it especially since the titles are very clear. And since the second of these suggested threads often gets discussed, and the usual stuff gets trotted out, it could be kept open as a sticky.

I apologise for being immature, senseless and disrespectful with my Maggie Thatcher posts

To absolutely no-one:laugh8:

Your right though, the thread has strayed a bit and I apologise for my part played in thatathumb..

She was only a grocer's daughter, but she taught Sir Geoffrey how...!!!

Think they are as popular as your guy Scott Morisson
Well that came right out of the magicians hat, I was in America at the time, couldn't believe it when ScoMo got in. I was hoping for Shorten to get in just to remind people how good they are at stuffing up the economy.

No but I read a lot of history and history is irrefutable proof, .........

Er ... I was always told "History is only written by the winners."

I lived through "The Thatcher Years", witnessed the destruction that she wrought on UK society and I am still living with many of the senseless decisions that she made in her pursuit of a personal agenda designed to enrich herself and her friends.

This is the person who stated:

"They are casting their problems at society. And, you know, there's no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look after themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours."

All I can say is that she looked after herself and her friends at the cost of many others. Since the time that she made that statement, I have read many apologists try to put a spin on the statement, including one that tried to make out to that the statement was never made!

Why? I can only assume that the decent (or possibly misguided) people amongst her followers were as ashamed of her actions and statements as the rest of us.

Weatherwatch: 1979, 'the winter of our discontent'

WINTER-OF-DISCONTENTLeice-007.jpg

On this day 32 years ago, a tanned Jim Callaghan, then the prime minister, gave an impromptu press conference at a freezing Heathrow on his return from a Caribbean summit. An unofficial strike by lorry drivers had halted petrol supplies and the country was almost at a standstill. Troops were on standby for a state of emergency to be declared. Callaghan's view that this did not amount to "mounting chaos" led the Sun to carry the front page headline quoting Callaghan as saying "Crisis, what Crisis?" and its editorial to use Shakespeare's opening line from Richard III, "Now is the winter of our discontent."

The parallels with the 1979 winter and the current one (students apart), so far only apply to the weather. After a mild autumn in 1979, repeated cold spells, when snowfalls covered the country and temperatures plunged, were followed by thaws, and another cold snap. Football fixtures were disrupted in the coldest winter since 1963; an entire round of the FA Cup was postponed for the first time in its history. Callaghan's complacency was remembered as the bad weather and strikes continued. Protests against wage freezes and cuts by hospital workers, refuse collectors, road gritters and grave diggers disrupted the country. The government fell on 28 March when it lost a vote of confidence in the Commons. The Conservatives used the Sun's headline "Crisis, What Crisis?" as a campaign slogan, and May's general election brought Margaret Thatcher to power.

No wonder the people of Britain wanted a change, strikes, trade defecit , budget deficit, inflation, more strikes. A country can't sustain the economy, something would have had to give, when it comes to facing down unions an insipid labor leader wouldn't have the courage. She administered the medicine which was the only cure as the situation in the UK was so bad.
