Hello everyone,

I'm doing my 1st ever Young's WineBuddy 6 bottle home brew wine kit & I'm now up to day 6 and according to the instructions I need to de-gas it.

The Instructions say to transfer the wine from the fermenting tub to another 6 times, so my first question is... Do I just pour it from one to another (including sediment & wood chips) or do I siphon it?

I've noticed a little bit of mould sitting on the top of the frementing wine (I'm assuming its because of the yeast) so my second question is should I just scoop the bits out & is this normal?

Many thanks in advance

There are several methods of degassing wine, usually kits tell you to shake the DJ with your hand over the neck releasing your hand every few shakes to let the CO2 out, you do this a few times a day for a couple of days, i dont like the sound of pouring it from one DJ or FV to another.
The easiest method (and the one i use) is to use a degassing wand and a drill you can make your own (see video below) this woill do the job in a couple of minutes.

As for your concerns about degassing in the original FV dont worry thats the way kits usually tell you to do it and it just means it takes slightly longer to clear, if you are making a supermarket juice wine you would rack it to a clean DJ then stabilise, degas and clear.

well, I scooped out the little bit of mould & poured from one bucket to another a number of times & put the hydrometer in... it didn't sink very far!

I left it a few days & noticed it bubbling (which it hadn't before) & left it for 6 more days before the hydrometer sank to the right level.

I've de-gassed it again & added the finings etc. & will hopefully bottle it tomorrow... fingers crossed!
