There are different alcohols produced in some conditions - as adomant mentioned, a warm fermentation temperature for instance.

I don't know if they affect different people differently at the time of drinking, but it seems possible; I'm not an expert on them sadly but it could be worth looking at fusel alcohol if you think there's something odd going on.

Forgive me... :D I DO have a warped sense of humour, and have even read your threads out to himself... :D and it IS serious that your mate has fallen off his bike and been hurt... but .. it really does crack me up... I can visualise it all happening...

If people are getting crazy hangovers and feeling ill from your brews then I'd suggest you're either fermenting too warm, or not for long enough for the yeast to clean up all the nasty fusal alcohols in the brews. The fact that it's happened to several people suggest it is definitely the brew and not the person being a lightweight drinker.

Hmm maybe remind your friend with the bike that the police still take that seriously, and they can get done for "drunk in charge of a vehicle", even if it is only a bicycle, they're still an accident waiting to happen.

3 large glasses of wine could be one standard bottle, I'd fall over after a bottle of wine (unless it's buckfast, in which case the caffiene keeps me upright a wee while longer). I agree about it being a pyschological thing too, if you didn't tell your mates it was homebrew wine, would they feel any different?

In future maybe you could try to make your wine less strong, I know it's a giggle to watch friends when they're suffering blind drunk but surely it's better to enjoy the wine (less alcohol might make it taste nicer too) and have a good night, than pass out early and wake up dying the next morning! Also, do your friends usually drink wine? I don't normally drink wine, but when I do it affects me completely differently than a night on cider and peach scnapps

Naaaa not if your a student.....

Ah yes, the student days! I don't mind lazing about with a hangover the next day but only if the children aren't around, they keep making me do stuff :P

I make a different batch for me & the wife & just give "friends" the **** stuff I don't like or make a brew full of alcohol & just put them outside when they're full
