Aft'noon Readers,

This DJ had Elderbury left in it for some while along with another that I've cleaned well.

I've soaked this in washing soda, in washing up liquid and scrubbed the damned thing with no luck.

So,

a) Would you use it,
b) If you WOULD, how would you clean it?

if its glass then i would however if the crud is not comming off I would use some rice and washing soda and swill it round till its clean then soak in bleach for a while , after that i would just clean it again and continue as normal demijohn

Young's cleaner/steriliser powder, 1 tsp in a gallon of hot (tap) water, the crap will lift away in sheets before your eyes.

Thanks everyone - been looking online and also found the rice & washing soda!! It HAS shifted some of it, even in this few minutes so I think I'll try it a few times!

Many thanks,

Ange

I always use VWP, it's not the easiest of stuff to rinse but it's amazing at removing crud.

2tsp in a gallon of warm water left overnight would shift that off I reckon.

I've just had to clean some old demijohns and air licks that have been sat in a garage full of gunk for about 3 years. The Youngs sterilising powder did ok but wouldn't get rid of it all. The vanish oxy however lifted it all straight off :-)

BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEACH!!!!!!!!!!!

;)

+1 got some old demi's given to me were filthy nothing would touch it but a bleach solution overnight they came out like new

I recently did two from the back of a garage - they had 17 year old wine in them but unfortunately no liquid left in the airlock :( It smelt lush all the same as I poured it down the drain  These were the mankiest glass DJs you could wish to acquire, but a good strong bleach solution is always unbeatable IMO, they came up like new ;)

Not knocking bleach but you need to be careful as it does not always clean and can just strip the colour out of things making it look cleaner than it actually is. Oxiclean for me plus some rice if very stuborn

Come Clean OS, which bleach companies are paying you to increase sales? We already know you are promoting BB kits

I imagine it would be a little difficult to strip the colour from white. :wha:

If the stain in the DJ is coloured and you bleach it removing its colour it may appear clean when the stain is infact still present.
