Would this work as a boiler/hlt?

Hi all

Had a leaflet come through the door tonight from Lidl, said they are stocking thishttp://www.lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/lidl_uk/hs.xsl/index_32214.htm Electric Fruit Preserver/Jam Make from tomorrow.

Now whilst I know nothing about jam making nor do I want to! I thought it may be useful as a hlt/boiler, it may need a little bit of modification but what do you chaps think? :wha:

For a penny short of 50 quid seems like a bargain in comparison to other digital boilers of similar size. No plans to go all grain yet but might be a wise investment

My concerns would be that it is only 27 litres, it has a timer on it which would have to keep being set and finally it is only 1.8kw. It will take a fair amount of time to heat the water (kettle elements are around 2.2kw)

Hi,

I have been comparing it to this one http://www.brewuk.co.uk/store/ag-equipm ... oiler.html which spec wise seems pretty much the same albeit over 7 times the price! With regards to the timer I have watched the video and it seems to show that the timer function can be turned off (about half way-ish through video when she is making hot chocolate!).

i remember the old ones the link is on jims where you have to ajust the dial and yes but on new ones dont know :wha:

why dont you just build ya own boiler with 2 tesco elements and a fermenting bin i use to use a 33 ltr bin and it would do a standard boil you have to think you need head space on a rolling boil so 27 less head space :hmm: get me drift :thumb:

You are right, the spec does look very similar and the jam heater may well work although some DIY may be required so it keeps a rolling boil. I personally would still be concerned at the capacity.

The second boiler looks very expensive to me.

I have brought one of these, I am yet to use it though (waiting to get electric to my shed) but have tested it and it keeps a rolling boil.
