So I emailed them again to ask about the mesh size and to see if I could get a photo of the underside of that hop filter so I could tell if it was suspended like aleman's. They ignored the request for a photo and told me they are using #20 mesh. Am I right in thinking that the consensus is that one needs at least #30 if not #40 when using pellet hops and a plate chiller?

The size of the pre filter really depends on the plate chiller and the gaps between the plates. I was advised the gap between the plates on mine should be no smaller than 0.5mm at worse, so they recommended using a pre filter which would filter particles smaller than 0.5mm (they actually said 0.1mm, which is not really usable for me/my application). I went for #40 mesh which has an aperture of .415mm, the theory being it'll do the job whilst maximising flow rate.
