Got this from an online source and it sounds MEGA!!!! I'm definitely going to do this but thought if a few of us were to do it then we could bring them to the Spring Thing?!?

The rules.......yes there are rules!......this is serious stuff!

All the below assumes a 10 gallon batch. Half the amounts if you brew 5g's.

9kg base malt - your choice
1.8kg Additional malt - your choice
900g Random malt - must be selected by your wife/girlfriend/mistress
900g Any crystal malt

Mash temp can be anything you choose - but you must specify before brewing so you can test your ability to hit a temp.

1 handfull of hops (any) must be added to the mash.

Now is where it gets complicated.................

Recipe must contain 3 or 4 hop species.

113g of hops must be 10% AA or greater
113g of hops must be 5-9.0% AA
113g of hops must be 4.99% AA or less
113g of hops of your choice
113g of hops must be saved for dry hopping - these can be any hop.

Take the dry hops and put back in the freezer. The remaining selection of hops gets split into 28g batches. These are then randomised. I personally write on the base of a cup the variety before filling and then have 16 cups in front of me. Randomise these by shuffling the cups around.

Boil time is 69 mins

Take 2 of the random cups and add at 69 mins. Take another 2 cups and add at 21 mins.

10 of the cups left over get added according to a pair of dice........yeh you heard right

Take 2 dice and roll them 10 times. The combined total of each throw equals a hop addition. For example, if you roll a 3 and a 4, you have a hop addition at 7 mins. Add each of these numbers to a random cup and add that cup of hops at that time in the boil.

The two remaining cups get added the remaining 2 cups get added at 1 min and 0 mins respectively.

Obviously you won't know what hop you're adding and when, so after each addition, flip the cup over and record the time/variety of the addition. You never know, this may be the best beer ever.....you will want to repeat it!

Lastly - the yeast is your choice.

BOOM!

Who's up for this? I'm doing it. Just ordering my stuff from the Malt Miller now and then going to brew it next weekend.

Here's what I've planned :

9kg base malt = crisp pale malt
1.8kg additional malt = mixture of carabelge, caragold and caramalt
900g random malt form the Mrs - she chose biscuit malt
900g any crystal = crystal rye malt

Hops are :

>10% = Amarillo
5-10% = Kohatu
<5% = Bobek
My choice = Amarillo
Dry hop = Cascade

Yeast = San Diego super yeast

BOOM!

Can't wait. Will brew next Sunday (maybe Saturday depending on time) and post the results. Will then punch the recipe that the dice decided into Beersmith to see where I should have been.

Can't wait

Have fun. I'll look forward to giving it a try. :thumb: Mine won't be until at least the weekend after next as I am away next weekend.

I might be up for doing this but can't for about 4 weeks as I'm just about to move house!
I'd definitely use Cry Havoc for this!

Been thinking about this brew last night and the 113g amounts comes from the US measurements of 4 ounces. What I'm going to do is reduce this to 100g to accomodate our hop packets of 100 grams.

I suddenly thought last night I'd have loads of opened packets only for 13g of hops.

Brew day is planned for Sunday.

Hops have arrived!!!!!!!!

Been doing a wee bit of thinking and the sums simply don't add up from what the guy said on the video and what he actually showed himself doing.......so I emailed him....and this is the recipe I will be following on Sunday :

20lbs base malt,

4lbs additional malt (this is intentionally vague)

2lb malt must be selected in some way by your wife/girlfriend/mistress. If none apply, your dog/pet/non-human living partner.

2lb Crystal _______

Mash

Mash Temp no greater than 180 and no less than 130 (this is a joke, calm down) Your target mash temp must be specified before you start to see if you can actually hit a mash temp or if you suck.

Six hop pellets must be added to your mash. (Note Rule #5 below)

Extract Requirements: can be converted if needed.

Hops (20 oz total): Your Recipe MUST include at least 3 and no greater than 4 hop species.

Must include 4oz of hops with an AAU greater than 10%

Must include 4oz of hops with an AAU between 5% and 9.9%

Must include 4oz of hops with an AAU less than 5%

Must include 4oz of hops of your choice – any AAU is acceptable

Must choose 4oz of hops to dry hop with – your choice.

Yeast: Yeast type is your choice

Rules:

1. Select the 4oz of hops you want to dry hop with and put those back in the freezer. – Yes, you can peek and select the hops you WANT to use – not what the cosmos selects for you.

2. Remaining 16oz. of hops put into cups in one ounce increments and randomized, so you will need 16 cups/containers for this thing. Scales? Although scales are strongly discouraged, they are not outlawed and you will not be disqualified for using a scale. You will, however, be looked down at and viciously criticized.

3. The type of hop is written onto the bottom of every keg cup into which it is placed (you may want to do the labeling BEFORE dumping in the hops).

4. Your boil will be SIXTY-NINE minutes long (because every boil should be 69 minutes).

5. SIX (or seven) PELLETS added as a mash hop addition

6. ONE cup added as a First Wort Hop addition

7. Two cups are chosen at random – and added at 69 minutes.

8. Two cups are chosen at random – and added at 21 minutes.

9. Take two cups and set them aside (see rule #10). You should have NINE CUPS LEFT – an ounce in each cup.

10. You will be rolling TWO dice, NINE times. The numbers on the dice will be added together to represent the minutes of the boil that each cup will be added. If you roll a six and a two, you will add that cup at 8 minutes. If you roll a one and a one, that cup will be added at 2 minutes, if you add a six and a six, that cup will be added at 12. Get it? Man, I hope so.

11. Add one cup at (1 minute) and one cup at (0 minutes). Don’t ask questions, just do it.

12. After each hop addition, you must record which hop was added and the time at which it was added.

13. The song “46&2” by Tool must be played at least two times during your brew session.

Primary Fermentation (7 day) temperature must be charted carefully Day and temp. 4 oz Dry hops added on the 8th day. Beer may be transferred to secondary or hops may be added to primary. SG and FG Gravity data MUST be gathered and documented.

Okey dokey. Brew's on for Sunday. Wee tweak from my planned brew - I'm not using Amarillo!

Grains :

9kg Crisp pale malt
1.8kg Grain mix = 500g Carabelge + 650g Caragold + 650g Caramalt
900g from the bird = 900g Biscuit malt
900g Crystal = Crystal Rye

Hops :

>10% = Apollo (19.8%) - 100g
5-9.99% = NZ Kohatu (6.8%) - 100g
<5% = Bobek (slight cheat as they came in at 5.19%) - 100g
My choice = Cascade (7.4%) - 100g
Dry hop = NZ Kohatu (6.8%) - 100g

Apart from the 100g of Kohatu, the rest will be split into 16 cups containing 25g each and randomised. The schedule for these 16 cups is :

1 x First wort
2 x Added at 69 mins
2 x Added at 21 mins
1 x Added at 1 min
1 x Added at 0 mins
9 x Added as per "the dice!"

Yeast :

San Diego Super (see starter below)

Check out this for a starter! That is thick with yeast! WOOSH!

Can't wait for Sunday
