I've bought a St Peters Ruby Red kit and I thought I'd buy the bottled version to try so I know what to shoot for.

I've noticed being a darker ale it has a strong taste.

Now I'm fairly new to Ales and as such I've been trying different types. I've found a few have a taste that I can only describe as being slightly "whisky" flavour.

Can I ask what ingredient causes this flavour?

Thanks

hmm, hard to know what you mean. the problem is whilst proper beer tasters have a plethora of imagary words they can call on, we all tend to just wing it and have no idea what anybody is talking about

is it a sort of sandpapery, grainy taste? if so it could be amber malt, biscuit malt, munich malt...you can find it prominently in Butty Bach too. they all add a biscuity type quality.

other than that, ruby red would also contain an ingredient like chocolate malt, dark crystal or CaraRed for colour and flavour.
