After a year of extract brewing I have finally bought myself a GF.
Which malt would be best for making a golden ale

I use Maris Otter for all beers, as a default. Pale Ale malt will be little different, in reality. As Graham Wheeler points out - the usage of all breweries claiming to use Maris Otter far exceeds the production thereof...

I would use only base malt for a Golden Ale and would recommend something along the lines of Summer Lightning, or Exmoor Gold, using perhaps Challenger to bitter and Goldings to flavour.
 
I used maris otter for my first lot of beers, but just got a sack of the irish ale malt from geterbrewed since it's so much cheaper and folks here said it was good. Not had a chance to brew with it yet although my belgian using their lager malt made some tasty wort (still fermenting).
 
I did an AG Pale Ale earlier this year but used so much grain that it came in at nearly 7% ABV.

I have modified the recipe for this coming Tuesday as a brew that will be bottled and brought out to accompany a Stout and a Bitter over the Christmas period.

I expect the ABV to drop to +/-5% due to using a kilo less of Maris Otter and I've changed the hops to suit what I have available. (I'm beginning to sound like Trigger the road-sweeper in Only Fools and Horses. I quote "I've had the same brush for fifteen years. It's had five new heads and three new handles."

INGREDIENTS
4.50kg of Maris Otter Malt
0.25kg of Cara Malt
0.25kg of Crystal Malt
25g EKG leaf
25g Saaz leaf
25g Hallertau leaf
Youngs Lager Yeast
Protafloc Tablet

PREPARATION
Rehydrate yeast.
Mill 4.50kg of Maris Otter.
Mill 0.25kg of Cara Malt
Mill 0.25kg of Crystal Malt
Prepare 1 x 25g EKG Bittering Hops
Prepare 1 x 25g Saaz Bittering Hops
Prepare 1 x 25g Hallertau Aroma Hops.
Put out 1 x Protafloc Tablet.

MASH METHOD
Strike Water = 2.5 litres per 1kg of grain = 10.0 litres at 85 degrees
Mash at 70 to 75 degrees for one hour - DO NOT exceed 75 degrees.
Run off wort and circulate using TWO vessels until wort runs CLEAR.
Heat SPARGE water to 80 degrees.
Sparge at one litre per minute. Stop sparge when runnings reach SG1.008 / SG1.012.
Overfill boil kettle so that there is no need to add more water later.

BOIL METHOD
Boil with 25g of EKG Bittering Hops for 60 minutes.
Add 25g of Saaz Bittering Hops at 30 minutes
Add Protafloc tablet and boil for 10 minutes.
Add 25g of Hallertau Aroma Hops for 5 minutes.
Cool to 24 degrees and run off into FV.
Pitch yeast and ferment at 22 degrees on worktop with Heating Pad assist.

Only do biab brews or partial mashes but now buy Irish Pale Malt from Geterbrewed along with the Irish lager malt and am happy with both:thumb:
 
I used some Carabelge malt along with torrified wheat and flaked barley in my last batch and with Re to colour it could only be described as a Golden ale, US05 and Northern Brewer hops @60 mins (30g pellets) and Aurora Super Styrian @5 mins (30g) and 7 days dry hop (30g) to complete it, more than happy with how it turned out. With regard to its "trad profile" it may not be citrusy but digaf as its for me not the public so play around with the hops and go with things you know you like or take a chance on something you haven't tried before and use it as an experiment.
 
Get the cheapest pale malt you can find, they're all so similar you can't tell any difference. Right now I'm on my third sack of Hook Head pale - £18.95 from the homebrew company and it is every bit as good in every parameter and end result as any I've tried in 30 years.
 
Dang you guys can get a sack for under 20? Here in Japan a 25 kg sack is around 9000 yen. That's 62 pounds! Jeez if I could get grain at that price I'd be brewing everyday. Just asking but how much are hops? I pay 5 for 100g.

My first brew with the GF will be this coming wednesday.
I plan on doing a trial run today using just water, to see how things are done
 
£62?? Yikes! I pay less than that (around £45) for a sack of pale, bit of roast barley, crystal and black malt + 5 or 6 100g packs of hops inc. delivery!!
 
I've read good things about Golden Promise malt for lighter ales, but like most have only used Maris Otter so far. I think Golden Promise is even paler and will produce a very light coloured beer.

Depends on the hops but usually between £3 and £7 for 100g

What DM said. £3 being English varieties and £7 being populur US Aus/NZ varieties. I'm glad I prefer bitters to US hop bombs as I wouldnt be able to afford to make them

I usually use Crisp's Maris Otter. I get it by the 25kg sack from a local brewery which hosts our Homebrew Club. Its £20.00 + VAT.

Dang. Guys are lucky. We only have 2 homebrew shops in the entire country and the cost per 100 grams ranges from 47 yen to 58 yen. So I order 4 kg and that's about 15 pounds then shipping is another 5 or so. But beer over here on tap at a bar is, at the cheapest, 5 to 6 a SMALL pint. I wouldn't even think there is 300 ml in those damn glasses. And today, at my friends brewery, I paid 4 for a 200ml glass of saison. Beer is costly in Japan.

Sorry, but the GBP to Japanese Yen correlation isn't something that I keep in my head. :lol:

So I checked today's exchange rate and "WOW!"

The maths are:

o 25kg of malt in the UK = ¥2,880

o 25kg of malt in Japan = ¥11,750 which equals GBP 81

At that price, I would have a heart attack if EVER a brew of mine went off! :doh: :doh:
 
Haha. But if you buy it buy 25 kg bags, it's cheaper a bit. But you guys get a great deal. But hops looks about the same.
 
I will buy try them all as I will buy enough for the brew, I know it is cheaper buying bulk but I suppose I need to experiment with all the malts
