And in small quantities the shops usually will crush them for you. Bulk you'll need a malt mill. Eventually you should get one so you can crush right before brewing. You'll get way better results. Once you crush your grains they start to deteriorate. But whole grains, as long as you keep them dry, will last a long time.

Thanks for the replies
I am starting to put the pieces together
My first brew with the GF will be this coming wednesday.
I plan on doing a trial run today using just water, to see how things are done

There are also many videos you could watch. I like the ones David Heath does.

I will buy try them all as I will buy enough for the brew, I know it is cheaper buying bulk but I suppose I need to experiment with all the malts

By all means experiment - it's what makes this obsession!

However, a word of warning for Chocolate Malt. I have some almost poisonous "Barley Wine" that had probably 80% too much Chocolate Malt in the mash and as a result tastes like liquid dark chocolate!

It was made in order to use up some grain. I was due to leave my brewing shed for three months and was worried that it wouldn't keep so I chucked everything together and brewed it. It's keeping just fine 'cos after two years I still haven't managed to drink it.:whistle:

So, experiment by all means but take it easy with your changes. :thumb:

Dang you guys can get a sack for under 20? Here in Japan a 25 kg sack is around 9000 yen. That's 62 pounds! Jeez if I could get grain at that price I'd be brewing everyday. Just asking but how much are hops? I pay 5 for 100g.

Bought a kilo of cascade pellets earlier this year for £17 from GEB and a 25kg of Irish pale ale malt and with delivery under £39....

Gerry, I hate you!

I second this. Not sure why I don't just do this too. Crazy amount of hops at a ridiculously low price.
Just bought 50g from a relatively cheap company for 2.45!
Gonna have to change my quantities

Where are you and who are you buying from.I have a chest freezer and can buy in bulk to freeze open packets though my garage does get quite cool so if they are foil wrapped I stick in cool place until ready for use which is usually a few times a month.
