Wherry stuck 1020

Hi all
My wherry was stuck at 1020 after 7 days I removed lid and v gently stirred it up cleaned airlock and replaced lid,it's now active every 10 min again,have I done the right thing ?
 
Well I reckon that you won't have done it any harm... I recall that Wherry has stuck on a number of occasions for forum users so you're not alone. As long as you've been very careful and attentive to sterilisation then you can't have really done any harm and the proof is probably in that it's merrily back on it's way again. :)
 
Lots of reports of this. Next time, use an 11g sachet of Nottingham yeast - Gervin English Ale yeast would be fine. Keep the kit sachet in the fridge until you have two of them, then use them together in a future Wherry (or other English Ale). Also, rehydrate the yeast correctly, rather than pitch dry, if that's what you did.

Whatever caused the stick, the above should help to avoid it next time.

I washed everything in the powder that came with kit before I touched it etc and the airlock etc :)
 
Glad to report the airlock is bubbling every 2 min again after it's gentle stir :)
And just picked up my free 50 brown glass bottles ....off to get a crown kit tomorrow I think ....any to avoid ? Or recommend as all seem the same basicly ?
Also on the prowl for some beer crates :)
 
Hope it's going ok for you. Ignore the airlock though. It may just be degassing. Only the hydrometer will give a true picture.
 
Ah right well I stored it yesterday ...I will check it again in morning maybe if still 1020 then get some yeast /restarted maybe or just keg it ?
 
Well just checked it this morning and it's now down to 1016 :)but slowed right down again but going to leave it couple more days :) then keg half and bottle the other half from the keg.
 
Maybe add a couple of teaspoons of yeast nutrient, won't do any harm anyway!
 
If its still dropping I'd recommend you leave it. It wont hurt to leave it another week and take regular Hydro readings, when its reading the same over a 3/4 day period then is the time to think about kegging/bottling. Its all about patience at this stage!!

Sure, if you keg now you'll get to drink your beer sooner, but wait a week longer and you'll be drinking better beer.
 
Sounds an idea :) it was reading 1014 yesterday just below about 13 today so plan is leave a bit longer and try to get 1012 :)

Sure, if you keg now you'll get to drink your beer sooner, but wait a week longer and you'll be drinking better beer.

Not to mention potentially exploding bottles if you don't have a stable SG over 3 days and it turns out it hadn't finished!
 
Hi, I currently have a wherry in the fv, it's been there 10 days or so and I have a question. I took a reading and it was 1010 initially but after 5 minutes it went down to 1020, is this normal?
 
Yeah I took a sample and dropped the hydrometer in and the reading was 1010 and stayed like that for a few minutes, I left the hydrometer in , went to make a cup of tea, came back and it was at 1020! There is a nice alcohol aroma and it tastes quite nice so it must be nearly ready, I just thought the reading would remain constant no matter how long the hydrometer stayed in the sample tube. Maybe it's the hydrometer because now it's back down to 1012! Anyway I will check tomorrow and take it from there :hmm:
 
Well it's been at 1012/3 for 3 days now so it's just gone into the barrel along with the brewing sugar :) three weeks for a taste then it's a merry Xmas for that one I hope as it's my first go in many years.

The wilco sweet newkie brown will go into the FV at the end of this week :)
