My reply wasn't directed at you I have to much respect to the likes of you, it was people like you that gave me the encouragement go AG, the type of people this forum needs.

Its not beer o'clock in my house but I will do latter, might have an Old Jake Barley Wine (which I certainly wouldn't have been able to brew without the help and encouragement of Aleman and others)

I agree. This thread seems like it is putting down people that brew kits.

Maybe I was being a tad sensitive

I am glad us lowly kit brewers still have the support of you old timers ( brewing years, not age ;) )

Planning on doing BIAB but when I mentioned it to SWIMBO I got  :nono:

I see this as being my biggest hurdle to moving on.

Do what I did and joined the ancient order of secret brewers. What she doesn't know won't hurt.

There is nothing lowly about kit brewing and if you never want to brew anything else then that is fine. AG Kits BIAB and extract are all a means to the same end it is just that some methods allow for greater control over the final product

What is most important to me is to continue to learn to brew and brew better beers each time, and I think most of us came onto this site too do that, and to be able and confident to pass on your skills to others, that to me is the whole ethos of this site.

Where does all this segregation come from?

Seriously i look at this as one big hobby. Beer is beer and how you get there is you own business. as long a you are brewing your own what does it matter in wich direction an innocent forum scripted question is directed....

I havnt even tasted any of my first 2 kits brewed, the inclination to go AG for me has nothing to do atall with the beer apart from the involvement taken to make it, i can devote a little more time to another hobby that has taken my fancy so i feel i can afford (time wise) to invest it there... one being better than the other really isn't a consideration in the decision. why is there this hyped rivalry and why would a simple question to a specific section of a whole brewing community mean that it puts down other non uniform brewers?

hopefully i can brew good beer or im screwed  kit or otherwise,,,, untill then ill drink what i have.

OK, I'll add my two pennorth.

Once you have your wort in an FV the process from then on is the same for Kits, extract and all grain, If you take care over the fermenting process you should get a good beer provided you are using a quality kit. I wasn't joking earlier in the thread when I said that I would be returning to kit brewing this year! I already have two kits in the shed ready to brew (just waiting for a yeast starter to grow up before using), one Barons Dutch Lager and the other a Brewers Choice German Pilsner. OK on to WHY, The CBA has been accused (in the survey) of being elitist and only of interest to Grain Brewers, which is a fair point, and one of the things we in the CBA should be doing is encouraging brewers to improve their beer whatever method they use and that is not with the simple panacea of "You should be brewing All Grain mate". The simple truth of keeping the yeast happy during fermentation (ie via temperature control etc) and using a decent yeast strain - be that liquid or dried, will improve a kit beer beyond recognition. As Jamil says in 'Yeast' a kit/extract brewer that pays attention to the process and keeps the yeast happy will produce a better beer than the all grain brewer that doesn't.

Ok, nuff said about that, I've not posted on the forum for a while, I'm trying to deal with returning to full time work after a long period of illness, and it has been difficult., I'm also trying to keep the CBA going forward along with the absolutely fantastic members on the committee   , without them, and some of the input from the way ahead group, I don't think we would be going anywhere. On top of that I have a very busy home life. Like GA, I also get more than a little fed up when I do manage to post that someone comes along and says, "We/I don't do it like that, I just do . . . . and it's fine". I'm not knocking new, keen brewers, but they really need to take care over what they post sometimes.

The other issue I have is that a lot of questions asked have already been answered in detail, and a simple search will find the information you are looking for. It has been pointed out that using Let Me Google That For You to reply to question on here could be considered a little sarcastic . . . It may well be, but it's got to be better than not posting an answer at all.

The other thing that really hacks me off is people replying to threads and actually not adding anything of value to the thread with their reply . . . What is the point? Some people may make a spelling mistake or forget an apostrophe . . . In case you hadn't noticed Moley isn't jumping on them any more (unless you try and correct him) . . . Do try and keep up . I hate text speak on the forum and if anyone uses that they won't get a reply from me . . . sorry but if I have to work out what you are asking I'll move on to another post, even if it is a really interesting topic you have brought up.

without being accused of not adding anything constructive to this.............

Well said Tony

When you said you were doing kits this year I did wonder if any of the shiny was going up for sale :hmm: :hmm:
