i have this year built a fruit garden but have plenty of room at the back of it against a 6ft fence so i am thinking of growing some hops next year
any advice or info would be great

I got my lonely fuggle from Aplus hops, but you may find some of our more experienced growers give them away free, think its was around January they split their rhizomes

Jim is there a guide to which hops grow better in our climate. I presume I'd struggle with cascade in a sunny North Wales. Thinking of getting challenger and bullion :?

Sorry to jump on your thread Darren

I also got mine from Aplus hops, "Prima Donna" a dwarf variety, I normally get enough hops off one vine to make 160 pints.

maybe next year then for me
I might be wrong but I think you need to plant them November onwards :hmm: with plenty of John Innes no2 potting compost around the roots :thumb:

Sean I honestly don't know, I presume there must be!
I planted Goldings, Fuggles and Brambling cross in 2009 and got 20g of Goldings (green).
This year I got 358g Goldings, 104g Fuggles and 28g Brambling cross.
Next year I expect to at least double the yields now that the roots are established.
Try the links I've posted above for suitable varieties.
Jim

Thanks Jim :thumb:

Some of the sites are selling challenger, so with them being UK I assume that's okay. I know bullion are an old English hop, just need to find someone that sells them.

Off for a Google

Fuggles and Goldings if you are into traditional bitter, most of the classics are brewed with at least one of the two, for more modern bitters challenger and fuggles or goldings for aroma flavour are also a winner.

I have yet to grow some hops, but I am filling a big hole with plenty of Horse Poo ready for some rhyzomes to go in in spring.
