Apparently the government plans to crack down on "All-you-can-drink" promotions which sounds sensible. Unfortunately they seem to have ignored the loss leading prices at which supermarkets are selling alcohol and since they sell 70% of the alcohol this seems ludicrous. Surely this can't be an oversight or simple incompetence - just how much power do these supermarkets wield I wonder... :hmm:

Way, way too much, ask the average farmer. Bit like the media really - which terrifies me!

I've had an idea to stop underage drinking in pubs... Teachers could volunteer to sit at a bar in their local and spot the kiddies as they come through the door. Provide said teacher with free beer all night and hey presto, underage pub drinking stopped overnight.

Guess what I do for a living? :D

On the other hand EB, much to my annoyance, they have all dropped their "own brand" ciders from 6% to 5.3%.
Maybe a drop in ocean, but it's there!

You may or may have not noticed most big commercial brewers moving towards 4% ABV

Becks VIER
Stella 4%
Carling moving from 4.1% ABV to 4.0ABV

All due to less duty having to be paid to the treasury

All the governments moves are nothing to do with cleaning up the drinking problem, they are subsidising plenty of problem drinkers to the tune of hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, as alcoholism is now classed as a disability, (an alchoholic can claim a better mobility allowance than a blind person) alcoholics also get more benefits to pay for their problem.

The government just want to raise more revenue, they are currently trying to bring in minimum pricing, about 50p per unit
they say to stop binge drinking, but they will slap a windfall tax on the brewers to therefore the big brewers will become tax collectors, every unit of alcohol in this country will have std duty + VAT+ a new anti Binge drinking Tax.

Smoking is bringing in less and less revenue each year, therefore alcohol has to be the new smoking, It wont be long before they ban drinking alcohol in pubs the rate they are going on, that is if any are left.

I think our hobby may therefore attract quite a few more people, in the coming years.

rant over

And then expect the government to introduce HOP and Grain tax

Then we'll just have to do more wine and cider :D

I can see Homebrewing being banned if the Neo-Prohibitionists get their way.

After all, we all make really, really strong beer at home

I can see my self moving to another country, where I can make my own informed decisions on what is good and what is not good for me my body and also my pocket!

Currently the amount of taxes I am paying for various things are seriously impacting on my wealth!

What sort of publication might we be hypothesising about?

If some :ugeek: happened to be looking for free proof reading and page layout with printing and binding at cost price, I might be able to assist.

Wow AM, you've already got your own subby cum printer in one hit! :D
Negatory good buddy, PMs exchanged and the print side would be beyond our line of w**k, I only get involved with personal or e-publishing. I'm still available for proof checking.

Now silly me thought that binge drinking is all down to lazy arse layabouts with nothing more to do with there time! Put the tax up they have to put up support allowance to compensate

Pubs are going to suffer more I think! If that's possible.

The few people that I know that drink gallons in one go, when you ask them why, you don't really get a real answer, and if you ask them what they drink norm is Larger and them silly alcohol pops. I like a drink my self but norm at most drink about 2 beers bottles 3 at most if I start drinking early 4pm ish. I like the merry feeling but being pissed and the next day feeling just not fun (to me anyhow) it should be about enjoying the drink to its fullest... And I don't mean just the glass LOL. Aroma taste etc is what it should be about, but alas its more about who can get more S#'t faced than there mate :(
