Anyone know anything about water pumps please?

Our cottage floods quite regularly as we live on and sometimes in the River Severn , we would like to buy two pumps which could bale out the house in not too severe conditions ,obviously they would have been of little use in 2007 when we had five feet of water in the living room. :(

I don't know a lot about pumps but you could always try Ship's chandlers for bilge pumps.
They are designed to run in dirty water and can also come in automatic format where they'll start pumping as soon as the water starts to gather.
They usually come in 12V but can also go up as far as 3phase superpumps for the big ships. Often overpriced on the chandler's sites but once you know what you're after a good mooch on Ebay etc. can often find the same for less.

I hope you find what you are after :thumb:

what you want to be looking for are called Sump pumps, they work in dirty sludgy water and down to half inch in depth. Unfortunately they are not cheap.( new)

also refereed to sometimes as "trash" pumps
are you looking for petrol or electric pump?
just wondering as the elec could go out if you have flooding if you have petrol you could still pump but you cant use it in confined places
keep a eye on Aldi they have done petrol pumps on a couple of occasions i bought there petrol generator and that has performed really well i even run a MIG welder from it

I'm not sure the electric pumps will have a high flow rate you really need but have a look at this link
http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/produ ... allpartial
also have a look at machine mart
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/searc ... ater+pumps

what you also have to be aware of is the duty cycle or rating of the motor look for words like continuous rated
as i think you will be using it for long lengths of time to pump out your house
also look for other household flood defenses like dams to put up in doorways and devices to seal off the soil plumbing (toilets) to prevent back flow

good luck finding what you need

Arco sell 1inch to 3 inch trash pumps. Petrol may be best if you get power cuts along with the floods. To give 24hr protection go for a sump pump with a float control on. Work well but you need to dig a sump in the cellar about a foot deep and 2foot diameter to sit the pump in. The sump acts as a drain point and allows the pump float switch to work. To prevent water getting in you can buy shutters for your airbricks. But don't leave them on permanently.

Please remember water and electric DON'T mix!! Always use an RCD! Also if the water reaches the electrics the pump won't work! ie: your out when the rain starts. Small petrol pumps are a better bet, if more expensive in the short term. (try ebay for 2nd hand ones).(I previously worked on flood callouts so have some experience, and a great deal of sympathy for your plight)!
