My wife wanted to add to my list of preparations

1) Lift anything you can't carry higher, put furniture etc. on bricks - this can mean the difference between ruined and ok

2) Elecric and electronic equipment don't like being near water - her sewing machine was ruined by the ambient moisture getting into the gubbins and rusting vital parts.

3) Get a shotgun to greet looters - like rats they will follow any disaster and happily take anything not nailed down. I am joking about the shotgun BTW
