It's not 'panicaty', it's pernickety... like me (I just fell into your trap there, didn't I?)

I know my spelling is bad but no need to be that pernicetty.

I'll try and make far less mistakes in my posts now...

FEWER

You got there eventually...

At the time we were talking about being pernickety. Anyway, I was literally being pedantic, rather than pernickety.

Can we also have something for to/too abuse? :D

Moley is Captain Spelling, you will have to ask him.
Abuse of to/too/two and your/you're should both earn instant suspension.

However, then we would have to expel most of the site crew, which is probably not a great idea.

Oh, and by the way, finning is a method of propulsion used by a diver, it has nothing to do with beer or wine. Anyone putting a double ‘n’ in the middle of finings will henceforth be hanged, drawn and quartered.

I hate to be a pernickety pedant but shouldn't that be hung, drawn and quartered.

No, hanged is correct.

Hanged is used only when referring to the hanging of a person by the neck with the intention of killing him or her.

In all other cases, hung is the past tense of hang.

Examples:
Correct: The murderer is going to be hanged at dawn.

Incorrect: The murderer is going to be hung at dawn.

Correct: We hung your picture on the wall.

Incorrect: We hanged your picture on the wall.

What about "Hung, drawn and quartered", then? Shouldn't it be "Hanged, drawn, and quartered"?

No, and this is why: "Hanged" is used when a person is hung by the neck with the intention of causing death. Being hung, drawn, and quartered is a rather different, very grisly, way to die: the person is not intended to die from the the hanging but instead – slowly, painfully, and with a great deal of mess – by being slit open so that his guts spill out, and then chopped up into quarters.

Can we have a watershed at 9pm each night please, after which no posts will be berated for spelling or* grammar errors. My spelling and gramar isn't two bad, but this is a homebrew forum after all! :drunk:

*Don't anyone tell me that should be 'nor'. Surely the negative can carry in those few words. I will have to scream.

[Added - PS Anyone looking forward to Fathers Day?]

According to Wikipedia it is "Hanged, drawn and quartered" because the punishment starts with the victim being hanged by the neck.

I think this may be a suitable punishment for writing sentences without any form of punctuation, because they are so hard to read.

It's one of the things i love about the english language, it can cause so much debate and upset yet still be completely baffling even to those who claim to be experts. i don't expect much in the way of grammar on forums especially beer related ones as most of us are probably under the influence when we write anyway.

I'd like to add loose/lose to the list please. Stop using loose in the place of lose.

"I'm a fat load and would like to lose a few pounds"

OK, I won't because the negative absolutely can as you are describing the singular thing "errors" not two separate things for which said berating could be handed down.

But I'm going to risk the cry of "SUCKER!!!" when I suggest that your spelling is exactly two bad...

Following discussions in the Mods Lounge, it has been decided:

Next person who mis-spells "lager" as "larger" get instabanned

Next person who says "hard cider" instead of just "cider" gets eviscerated (that means I remove their guts)

Penalities for apostrophe abuse are yet to be finalised

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
