Mrs S has had a go at making Vinegar using some out of date cans donated by my neighbour. It has not been a great success. Not sure if any additives or preservatives in the beer have been the problem or what. Question is I have now read that making vinegar and brewing can be a conflict of interests due to vinegar spoors in the air contaminating the beer. I brew outside and ferment in the garage but I do bottle in the kitchen will I be running a risk of contamination or is it a myth...........

I made vinegar last autumn or should I say the fruit flies did. I have been brewing all the time my vinegar has been fermenting away with no ill effect on the beer.

What you need is fruit flies which are abundant in the autumn, or some mother of vinegar from from some unpasturised vinegar bought from a health food shop. Failing that if you are passing Manchester I've got some you can have.

Thanks Alister but she has a thing about make it yourselfing. :D

She used a Mother made from that stuff you mentioned. Think it must be the Cans of beer used.

Are fruit flies the little black buggers that are being a pain at the moment.

Eddie I will not be letting her have any good beer but I might just have a corni of old stock she can ruin I mean turn into vinegar :D

I was pestered with little beetles a few weeks ago. At the moment there are blackfly (aphids) - but the myriad 7-spotted ladybirds are steadily nomming their way through those. I've not seen any fruit flies - no fruit yet.

Think I may be paranoid about them and am seeing things, but it looked like one in the shed today. Blowtorch came out anyway as the wasps were trying to nest in there again :x

25 years ago, when I was a match angler, I'd have thought 'free bait'
