I've just found and lovely Rum called sailor Jerry and its got Vanilla in it. Tastes lovely...
My question is....

Has anyone tried vanilla in a beer?

Made one the other month with a liquorice root in it and that tastes bloody great, so brain got wondering about vanilla.

Interesting idea! Vanilla could be a little creamy and sweet for my tastes (definitely not a big fan of that Vanilla Coke), but I like it, what were you thinking of putting it in with?

Hiya,
Was going to put it in a stock 5% bitter. Didn't want too much flavour, just a hint.
I guess the vanilla pods could give off too much so was wondering about adding essence to either the fermenter or the barrel. Its just how much is the thing. Trial and error I guess

Hi eskimobob made a vanilla stout clicky I think that vanilla added to beer would be nice if like me you like vanilla

Ive used vanilla in a beer before, and it was a cracker! it was a Bourbon Vanilla Porter, I used about 400mls of Bourbon and a tea spoon of vanilla essence in the 2ndary fermenter, and its an awesome beer! :drunk:

As promised

4kg Maris Otter
210g Cara-Aroma
200g Cara-Malt
110g Cara-Munich II
350g Chocolate
80g Carafa I
100g Roast Barley
50g Black Patent
1.5kg Liquid malt extract

60 - 28g Nugget
20 - 20g NZ fuggles, 15g Williamette
FO - 15g NZ cascade, 8g Styrian - this is probably a complete waste of time tho IMO due to the aging so I wouldnt waste your hops...

Wyeast 1968

2ndary fermenter : 600mls Tawny Port (not 500, but reckon you could easy use a whole bottle) and 20gms Oak shavings for 31 days..

I also mashed just the maris otter for 30 mins by itself before adding the specialty grains, allthough again im not sure if there was any benifit to doing this..

Woops  Um, er, ive just realised that I posted the complete wrong recipe... Sorry about that, I will post the proper one for the Bourbon Vanilla Porter later tonight
