Looks as though you racked to secondary too early . . . I know US 05 is supposed to be a poor flocculator, but judging by the amount of sediment there, it was racked too early . . . Isinglass is not really effective with a pea soup of a wort (what fining agent is?), and especially if the wort is still fermenting . . . albeit slowly

I think you're right A. I racked this again after standing it in a cool place and restarted it with US-05 plus 250g DME added to the wort which stood at 1020 before additions.

The APA above is still going ,although slowly, after its restart and is looking a lot clearer. I'm now going to clear the Coniston Bluebird that has been dormant in the secondary for 4 days. In the interests of science I picked up 250ml of Brupaks Auxiliary Finings and intend to use them.

It say's on the bottle 40-60ml dosage/25l but doesn't say how this is applied i.e. directly, stirred in or diluted with water/wort. Can anyone advise :?:

I think Wez swears by Aux finings so he's probably your man. I've used them a couple of times before but, not to any great effect. I applied directly to chilled wort and stirred gently.

Sorry K, missed the orignial post.

I use AF quite a bit, although I'm not sure which it is as I get it in a 2.5L jug from my local micro.

50ml for 25L is spot on, they need stirring in but I add them as they come, I guess you could mix with some wort/beer though, what I do is add them as i'm dropping from FV to keg about half way through the racking process so they get a good mix, ideally try to get the keg as cold as you can then - I stick the keg in a fridge at 4c for 48 hrs.

When I have added them to a FV at the end of fermentation I have noticed a 3mm to 4mm layer of grey gunk at the bottom of the FV on top of the yeast cake.

If you use isinglass as well make sure you leave 48 hours between your AF addition and your IG addition as they cancel each other out, as you may know.

Hope that helps :thumb:

Cheers Wez, :thumb: They're Brupaks. By keg are you meaning Cornie and if so are there any issues with the finished product :?: I'm going to IG as well so will drop it into another fermenter and go from there.

I actually use KK's as they work better for me with the Beer Engine.

One idea is to add the AF at the end of fermentation to the FV leave it for 48hrs and then rack off to corny and add IG in there or just add IG to the FV 48hrs after the AF went in.

I think the key though is getting the beer as cold as you can after fermentation, if you can - get it as low as you can, the AF seems to work better at low temps :thumb:

No issues with the finished product at all. :)

I've dropped the beer into another FV and put it outside. We had our first frost last night so the temperature should take care of itself.
