Using a muslin bag over the end of a siphon tube

Hi everyone!

Doing my first brew at the moment and am planning to bottle straight from the FV to bottles via a standard siphon.

Am I ok to put a muslin bag over the end of the siphon tied with a zip tie (sanitised) to act as a filter?? Or will that oxidise it? Cheers!

Yes, but sanitise the muslin bag first by putting it in a pan of boiling water for five minutes first before attaching it over the end of the syphon.

I frequently bottle and don't see the need for any additional filtration, of course you can do what suits you, but keeping the end of the Syphon above the trub layer should be enough, do you have a bucket clip?

other than the cloudiest junkiest meads i never try to strain or filter anything. the benefit of trying to filter over just using time and gravity is never apparent to me. YMMV

I do, it's more that I've put dry hops in there not in a bag so im aware there is a lot of trub which im a bit worried about

Thanks for this - it's more that i've dry hopped it, without having the hops in a bag so there is more trub than usual and i think it could be quite seditmenty

I have and still do I use supermarket veg bags which I boil first. Hope pellet fragments have been a problem when dry hopping.

I sometimes do this but when moving the wort from mash tun to boiler or boiler to FV. I just leave my bag steeped in starsan and then filter through it. Gets the worst of the bits out and I think helps with a cleaner beer. Never had any probs.
