Using a hydrometer

I know this might sound like a stupid question but does a hydrometer give you an accurate reading when placed straight into the fermentation vessel or do you have to use the glass tube to get an accurate reading.

It works in the fermentor as well,
Just make sure it's sterile and once it's in give it a spin to dislodge any air/co2 bubbles :thumb:

I do this all the time, and as metioned, so long as you sanitise the hydrometer, it works just fine.

Don't forget to adjust for temperature. In my part of the world, particularly now we are in the middle of summer, there is no way I can chill my wort below 25º with just my immersion chiller. I need to drain my brew into the fermenter, seal it with clingwrap, and place it in my fermenting fridge. I can pitch my yeast later that evening or the next morning, when it is down to 18ºC for my ales.
