Having had recently a small heart attack and resulting a stent fitted i am now taking Statin tablets. In the documentation that came with them it states to avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice. I have heard that Citra, Casscade and chinook can impart grapefruit tastes into a brew, is this likely to be the same as taking the actual fruit or juice or is it just a hint. I have tried medical sites trying to find results for this but couldn't find anything. So I am hoping someone on here could enlighten me. Many thanks in hope

The problem with grapefruit is that it contains furanocoumarins that block the enzyme CYP3A which would otherwise regulate how much of certain statins reach your bloodstream.

The grapefruit flavours in hops typically come from thiols such as 3-MH and 3-MHA, which are nothing to do with furanocoumarins.

However, if you're at all concerned about this stuff - talk to your doctor rather than random strangers on the internet.

I wa snot that concerned just that i had read about the grapefruit qualities of these hops but i will certainly clear with my doctor before using them
