Hello everyone,
I see many recipes for ipa's especially that require the big American C hops which tend to be rather more expensive than more obscure hops, my question is does anyone use less well known hops (and possibly cheaper) that get the same results?

I get good results from using a combination of Huell Melon and Hallertau Blanc. No way is it the same beer as one produced using US C hops, though.

Huell melon, manderina bavaria, hallertau blanc, moteuka, el dorado, idaho 7... there are quite a lot of good combinations, but of course they aren't the same. Other good hops, but as expensive or more ... vic secret, galaxy, simcoe, nelson sauvin.

Thanks for your replies, and great input, but I think the question still applies, I know the IBU of the big C's is distinct, but can you combine or use other hops?

Falconers Flight is usually cheaper than the American C hops but is a hop blend which is not too dissimilar.

I’ve also become a big fan of Mosaic recently. I keep reading mixed reports on it and a wide range of flavours, but I feel like I get a big peach/apricot hit from it and I really like it.

Thanks Mick, thats a few worth looking at, just annoys me when classic British hops are a decent price then big C's are always a couple of quid more

Getting a little bit tired of tasting Citra in everything hoppy. Opened a new packet of CTZ- in fact it was Columbus- and the smell was gorgeous. Already started a (little) brew with just Columbus and Simcoe. Hoping for good results.
By the way, has anybody used Enigma? I've got a 100g packet unopened, but read conflicting stories on the web. Is it any good?

Had a few beers down the pub recently which tasted of onions. Was told that was mosaic. It really is quite odd but i didn't pick up on it when i used it.

My favourite IPA combination is...

Bramling Cross
Fuggles
Hersbrucker
Saaz

The only US hops I've ever used was cascade... :tinhat:

I got caught up in the American hop fad some time ago... and wish I'd never fell for the hype. I found them boring at best and dreadful at worst, with the exception of Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus, which I still find most agreeable. But my new favourite these days is.... Pilgrim! Don't hear too much about that one but it's a cracker.

Glad to hear it. Recently got a half-price half-kilo from Stock's Farm. Jo must have talked me into it. And I was wondering what to do with them.

Target gives a harsh bitterness I really like and is interesting as a late hop and cheap. I don't remember ever seeing it in a recipe though.

Mosaic is a cracking hop, M&S do a Adnams Mosaic pale ale and it’s super

Try a web search for "hop substitutions" there are loads of lists that offer alternatives to most hops.

A couple of years ago I brewed an American amber ale with simcoe, summit, and saphir that was awesome and I think it would work well in an IPA at a higher ibu rate.
