When I started I intended to do gluten-free beer, and it would'nt be hard to beat shop prices on that!
But the kit went off the market so I do country wines instead, mostly, and they're pretty cheap and pretty tasty. Still buy "real" wine though. It's a hobby, not a money thing.
Since my wife drinks cider coz of the gluten-free thing I've been doing TC a fair bit, which is definitely cheap and at worst acceptable and at best very good - better than most shop ciders. But there it's not done for price either. TC rather than real apples for how easy it is to quickly start a gallon whenever you want.
I have done a couple of gluten-free ersatz beers (Duncan Incapable's recipes) but didn't cost up the ingredients list - wasn't specially cheap but was pretty good.
I've done one experiment with millet and will be looking into that more over the winter, and while it promises to be cheap it'll use up a lot of time and effort - got to malt it and probably do separate rests for the various enzymes during the mash.
