Interesting

The usual quantity is a pound to the bushel of malt, or 8 lbs. to the quarter, but for keeping beer, it should be extended to 10 or 12, and if for one or two years to 14 lbs. to the quarter. Small beer requires from 3 to 6 lbs. the quarter, and rather more when old hops are used.

So a bushel of malt is 34lbs = 15kgs roughly

1lb = 450g

So the "usual quantity" is 450g hops per 15kg malt or 150g hops per 5kg malt (more common for a 23litre brew length).

I'm a bit confused as to what it means after that though, whats a "quarter?"

The only thing I can think of, was in the past certain dry ingredient were also measured by volume ..so a quarter of wheat/barley/etc would have been a quart pot (ie 2pints) full to the top?????? but this is only a shot in the dark at the moment...will have to do a bit more surfing..get the board out and lets head to the beach....
