I have a 38l thermo pot for my mash tun and going to fit a fixed dial thermometer later in the week. Rather than trapping the eti thermometer cable in the lid I would prefer a fixed one in place. Plus I think I'llget a better reading as it will be deeper in the grainbed rather than a few inch from the top.

So are you happy with your fixed thermometers?

I have one in my thermopot but wouldn't bother if I am honest....

- it can get in the way when I want to dough in
- it can get in the way when I am emptying the tun ( I scoop a lot out before I pick it up )
- its quite slow to react in comparison to the digital one that I always check the mash temp with anyway
- I get virtually zero heat loss over the period of the mash so never really look at it now anyway

Sorry Hawks i have to disagree , i have a fixed dial thermometer and it is so much easier for me ( i do step mashes and very useful ) and it is more accurate than the digital type which can be out by a few degrees .

And perfectly fair... as usual in this hobby we get to disagree, I promise not to flounce off though

I underlet with a little stir which I have to avoid the filter pipe so that's fine. But once calibrated I think it will be a lot better than having to stick one in the top.
