I look at it this way, the chances of containing the virus is zero.
It is out in the wild, it is going to rampage through the population and I believe it is correct that the estimate of 80% of the population will get it provided by the WHO and other leading virologists is correct.

Soooooo
1) do you fly in the face of that science and believe you can prevent that level of infection and can cheat the virologists predictions and shut down the whole country? Utterly devastate the economy and cause massive social upheaval
2) accept that level of infection will happen and therefore do nothing and let nature do its thing
3)do a mixture of the above to try and control the rate of infection to not overload the nhs, but accept 80% will get it?

I am no fan of Boris, but I think he has the right approach.
He's committed political suicide, but I do think he's right.
Also look at Korea. They are seeing much lower infections now, but how long do you stay locked down for? As soon as they lift the restrictions, the virus will just spread again!

Damned if he does damned if he doesn't. I personally think his approach is the better of the options at the moment but some people are just out to vilify him whatever he does. If he shuts everything down and people lose their jobs it will be Boris's fault the others will then turn on him for not protecting the vulnerable I am glad I do not have to make the call.
People are using this virus as a political platform and not pulling together to do what has been asked of us whether it is the right call or not?

I reiterate: All I can say is ‘just minister’ , ‘Just prime minister’ & ‘The Thick of it’. Imagine all the advisors & civil servants etc... whispering in the wings. I would not want to be in his shoes right now. Basically everyone must pull together.

BJ approach is not the spread of rate of infection, but to infect as quickly as possible - herd immunity. Isolation is delaying rate of infections. And delaying might to other things. Lots of people working on a treatment for it, manufacturers are producing more medical equipment - time is what needed.
I don't really understand how people can trust BJ, he lied on many occasions, was sacked few time for his lies. He is not the person I would rely on. Information about government actions are leaked through "trusted sources" - not through a proper briefings.

As an update to this, daughter woken up this morning with a sore throat, stiff joints and a ticket cough.
So self isolation begins!

She's currently lay in bed between me and mum getting cuddles, so we have it too. If it is indeed corvid and not just a 13yr old being lazy

Now the big question is, will the virus survive in beer, as I'm due to put a brew on tomorrow.... priorities guys, priorities

How many people have you ever heard of under 65 with no related health conditions in hospital with flu let alone ICU. These numbers are a few days old and its all moving very quickly.

I haven't a clue what the figures were before a flu vaccine was invented hence my earlier post

Lets face it Boris doesn't make the decisions and the reason they are not shutting schools has been explained several times in the thread i do think its time to ban unnecessary gatherings of huge numbers of people.

Chris Whitty is well respected by my niece who is an Epidemiologist. I think we should trust him. He has to balance the risk to other people who need the NHS at least as much as Covid patients.

I posted something similar earlier in the thread, the government are taking advice form experts in the field and making what they think are the right decisions based on that, if he went against that advice and locked everything down causing businesses to fail etc the same people would be here saying the same things about his decision making.
I am getting a little tired of reading posts about this being Boris's fault from the Tory hating members here and i bet i am not alone.

You are right B and any more Boris blaming posts will be removed, i am not saying don't question the governments decisions in the thread but Tory hating posts like the one earlier (which i removed along with any quotes of it) saying its the British public's fault for voting them in will no longer be tolerated.

I don't think a new thread about the Tory handling of it would be a good idea as we all know how that would end and how soon.

Every Briton over the age of 70 will be told "within the coming weeks" to stay at home for an extended period to shield them from coronavirus, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said.

He told the BBC the advice will not come into force just yet but when it does it will last "a very long time".

The government has faced pressure to do more to tackle the epidemic after the UK death toll rose to 21 on Saturday.

All deaths so far have been of people over 60 or with underlying conditions.

Over-70s - and younger people with certain health conditions - will need to remain at home and have groceries and vital medication delivered, the health secretary said.

Mr Hancock said people without symptoms would be able to visit older relatives and friends as long as they stayed two metres - or six feet - apart from them.

He said car manufacturers, weapon makers and army suppliers would be asked to change their production lines to make ventilators for use in hospitals treating coronavirus - which can cause severe breathing problems.

The health service is to stop non-urgent surgery and implement a huge training programme to retrain medics from other specialisms to treat those who become seriously ill with the Covid-19 disease.

"We will stop at nothing to fight this virus and I think people have got the impression otherwise," Mr Hancock said.

A 2 week shop, I cant load my fridge quick enough. The younger ones will eat grapes raspberry's and strawberry's by the bucket load not to mention yogurt. I do one big shop a week then top up with the local shop a few times with the essentials

I'm similar as there is six in our house and my eldest boy at 16 eats twice what I do and I can eat a fair bit.
I was in ALDI Buncrana on Thursday and the shelves were stripped of the basics toilet roll,cleaning products,meat and I noticed that the RED SAUCE was also empty as well as porridge.
Never thought red sauce was a basic but messed up my shopping day as when I got back home I had to go to three different shops just to get rice.....

On the subject of panic buying it doesn't help when you read things like this, if you are going to have to isolate for an unknown amount of time you are going to have to buy extra as you wont be allowed out to shop, its alright saying shop online and get it delivered but this is the over 70's we are talking about and many may not know how to.

Devastated. What will I do without my Carribbean sunshine drink!
