Interesting age stats from china.

I deleted the picture, informative though it is, in the interest of saving space. This is clearly not a societal issue, only a personal one for those who have already exceeded their biological significance.

I really do apologise for offending the emotional, I just don't react that way to a serious situation.

Only sensible thing to do seems to be to comply with the things that do not make things worse (hand washing etc, etc) and worry more about your offspring than your antecedents. That's, co-incidentally, what my parents always taught me.

I posted the info below earlier in the thread it would be interesting to see a graph of the ages of all who have died worldwide.

Yep, that is the crux of it, and the graphic says more than words.

A sceptical thought only but With a global over population thats been aired recently on TV its a bit of a coincidence this focuses on the elderly or inferm people, I wonder how much governments will save in the longer term with pensions and care. Its almost a designer cull.
But then that could be bull although our governments strategy seems do little save money and economy first.

They would have more control strategically passing on the the virus throughout the country in stages, hospital staff and key people first before it goes out of control by doing nothing strategies.

If we go too early the consequence could be loneliness???
Is this a joke?

I think it means family members not visiting eldey relatves who they care for, a lot of people are unpaid carers if they suddenly stop visiting its going to be bad for the elderly.

It’s spiralling out of control rapidly.
The schools will probably be closed by next Monday, a week too late.
We are actually watching it killing hundreds of people in Italy etc and still feeding the public the old British bull***t of keep calm and carry on.
How on earth can the majority of the world (Including the UK) ban major sporting events, gatherings etc but not close schools??? How can people be so stupid to believe the **** being trotted out (even by the First Minister) about kids will meet informally and spread it more that way.
It’s too late now, you only get one chance to slow down the spread but stiff upper lip and all that

Hey we're British!!!!!
Bull, should someone with a mild form of this pass it on, yes give it me but surely the higher people of the country already know this. Obviously the strategy is, save money but pledge billions nobody will need.

That doesn't add up to 100%

As above, it's the percent of those infected in each age group rather than a percentage of the total. But if you'd rather have it that way :

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30627-9/fulltext

"Italy has had 12 462 confirmed cases according to the Istituto Superiore di Sanità as of March 11, and 827 deaths....The mean age of those who died in Italy was 81 years and more than two-thirds of these patients had diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or cancer, or were former smokers. It is therefore true that these patients had underlying health conditions, but it is also worth noting that they had acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pneumonia, needed respiratory support, and would not have died otherwise.

Of the patients who died, 42·2% were aged 80–89 years, 32·4% were aged 70–79 years, 8·4% were aged 60–69 years, and 2·8% were aged 50–59 years (those aged >90 years made up 14·1%).

The male to female ratio is 80% to 20% with an older median age for women (83·4 years for women vs 79·9 years for men)."

It's been suggested part of the reason for the high mortality is doctors having to play God and allocate limited resources of ventilators etc to the under-65s, over-65s are on their own.

It would indeed be interesting to view the stats for other countries. The Chinese are the worlds biggest consumers and producers of tobacco and it is possible that the older generations have relatively more smokers compared to other countries. And since one significant cause of death from Covid-19 is respiratory failure it could be that the Chinese stats are not representative of what happens elsewhere particularly the UK where smoking continues to decline, and purely on casual observation the smokers tend to be in younger age groups.

I know I have put some light hearted posts up, but I am taking this thing seriously after all I have copd although mild it is still a worry and I am in the age group 60-69 were the fatality rate is 4.8% so yeah I am worried but not to the point of irrational thinking, it is what it is and all you can do is listen to the advice and be sensible about it,

See above for Italy stats - about 28% of Chinese smoke, 23% of Italians, 15% of UK. In China it's massively biased towards men, but there's not a huge variation by age, it peaks among those born ~1950 but not by much - see https://jech.bmj.com/content/71/2/154

You'd think that as a respiratory disease the people with lung problems would be at particular risk, and they are - somewhat. But one of the differences between this virus and eg flu is that it goes for the heart in particular, and the biggest risk factors are things like hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, coronary heart diseases, and cerebrovascular disease, possibly because either directly or via treatment they see increased expression of ACE2 which is Covid19's route into human cells (https://www.thelancet.com/pdfs/journals/lanres/PIIS2213-2600(20)30116-8.pdf ).

So in terms of practical things you can do to reduce your likelihood of complications from Covid19, then a healthy heart and reducing blood pressure are good places to start. So healthy eating and something like Couch to 5k (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/get-inspired/43501261, https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/get-running-with-couch-to-5k/) or 5BX (http://fit450.com/HTML/5BX_Intro.html ) are things you can do at home.

I wonder if smoking is one of the reasons the deaths toll is so high in Italy.

Edit to add -
(ANSA) - Rome, May 31 - The number of smokers in Italy is on the rise, the Higher Health Institute (ISS) said on World No Tobacco Day Thursday.
Some 23.3% or 12.2 million Italians now smoke, 0.4% up on last year, the ISS said.
Some 27.7% of men, up 3.8%, and 19.2% of women, down 1.9%, are smokers.
One out of 10 teens between the age of 14 and 17 smokes regularly, the iSS said.

Much of Italy is currently in lockdown as the country's tally of coronavirus deaths has topped 1,000.

The outbreak is putting the Italian healthcare service under immense strain. But will the UK follow this path?

On Thursday, Boris Johnson's chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, said the UK was four weeks behind Italy "in terms of the scale of the outbreak" if not "in terms of the response".

Does that mean we're four weeks away from a similar fate?

Not necessarily. Here are three reasons why experts believe the UK's epidemic could be different from Italy's, and why the number of cases here means something different.

Jet2 planes heading to Spain have been turned around in mid-air as the airline cancelled all flights to the mainland, Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands because of coronavirus.

Confirmed cases in Spain have risen by 1,500 in 24 hours and thousands of people have been placed in lockdown.

The country's death toll has reached 120 and it is set to enter a two-week state of emergency.

Jet2 said the health and safety of its customers was its number-one priority.

It comes as a newborn baby and its mother tested positive for the coronavirus in England.

According to the Sun newspaper, medics are trying to confirm whether the baby, who was tested at North Middlesex Hospital, was infected during birth or before.

Did our 2 weekly shop today. It was busy, but no panic buying that I could see. Managed to get everything we would usually buy, perhaps with a couple of substitutions. I guess I'll just top up shop now. I still can't believe these Muppets panic buying stuff. What a bunch of arseholes.
