I reckon it's all pretty pointless if they won't close the schools - which I doubt they will do until it is too late given the financial impact. Schools and hospitals is where this thing is going to proliferate.

While they still allow big events its going to spread, a dig football match cancelled yet its OK for 200+ of them to sit in a room now at PMQ's.

We will announce later today that we are moving to the next stage. Italian style lock down on the cards and schools closed for up to 2 months. You heard it here first

If situations don't improve in the Netherlands, we'll follow Italy in 2 weeks.

If I only had one room, with a double bed and one of us became ill, I would sleep on the floor. If the room was too small we could sleep head to tail. My wife has done that before when I snore!

There's a school of thought (although hotly debated) that schools may be the wrong priority for this particular virus, the patterns of infection are rather different to flu among the young - and also kids will socialise enough when school is out for it to be a bit moot, the UK has far fewer kids living under the same roof as the elderly than eg China or Italy, and also kids will always be a liability as they don't clean themselves thoroughly enough.

That school of thought says that instead, the priority is to shut down public transport - but obviously that has rather more economic effects.

I'll emphasise - this stuff is still under debate by epidemiologists, it's interesting that we have so many here who know better than the experts.

Joking aside its not going to work for those of us who don't have a spare room and second bathroom/toilet which I imagine is most of us.

If you look at what the authorities are actually saying then you'll see they are realistic about that. For instance the CDC in the US : "As much as possible, you should stay in a specific room and away from other people in your home. Also, you should use a separate bathroom, if available." (my italics)

I think not (and I work in school), by how they (gov) presenting it, looks like they want to keep things open as long as possible. Almost like it is all good, nothing is really happening. Easter holidays soon, the probably hoping nothing has to be done till than

I work in a University and pretty sure we are going to do something...maybe close over Easter to minimise the effect to students...or maybe it is just wishful thinking as I'd like a free holiday and some time to brew!

BBC News -

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK has now reached 456, the biggest rise in a single day.

The Department of Health confirmed there had been 83 more cases since Tuesday. Six patients with coronavirus have died in hospitals in the UK.

It comes as NHS England plans to expand the number of people it can test in a day to 10,000, up from 1,500.

Confirmation of positive test results will also be sped up with most people receiving them within 24 hours.

The latest person to die with the virus in the UK was a man in his early 80s in Watford who had underlying health conditions.

Meanwhile, a 53-year-old British woman has become the first person with Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, to die in Indonesia, according to local media reports.

It is not clear whether the woman - who was reportedly critically ill with multiple health conditions - died due to the virus.

What does self-isolating mean?

If you have been told to self-isolate, you need to stay indoors and avoid contact with other people for 14 days.

It is important to follow the advice for the whole period, even if you do not have any symptoms.

Living in shared accommodation
If you live in shared accommodation (for example, university halls of residence):

  • stay in your room with the door closed, only using communal kitchens, bathrooms and living areas when necessary
  • avoid using a shared kitchen while others are using it
  • take your meals back to your room to eat
  • use a dishwasher (if available) to clean and dry your used crockery and cutlery; if this is not possible, wash them by hand using detergent and warm water and dry them thoroughly, using a separate tea towel

While they still allow big events its going to spread, a dig football match cancelled yet its OK for 200+ of them to sit in a room now at PMQ's.
Also sports events are nothing compared to transport hubs. You want to controll it you have to start shutting down airports and train stations/underground. Again no way this will happen untill it's far to late

So sorry, I should have prefaced my view by clarifying that it was opinion only based on my experience of how illnesses spread through schools.

In terms of your (rather haughty - apparently - I'm sorry to say) assertion that there are so many'experts' on here, well, it is the snug, and this is a virtual pub for pub banter

It's coming, announcement now towards end of week whilst a few things are put into place. The only way the nhs can deal with the demand is to slow down the spread.

If this 'announcement' is the delay phase, what do you imagine it being? Schools closed, large sporting events cancelled and people encouraged to work from home? I'd be surprised if they moved to that this quickly, but you never know.

Yeah all the above really. Haven't seen the news but apparently there is mention that they are drafting the legislation now.

Could starsan be used as hand sanitizer if diluted correctly dumb question???

It was asked in #120 and I replied in #142 - short version is yes it will work but just plain soap or Fairy Liquid are cheaper options that will work better.

Health minister Nadine Dorries tests positive - Somebody hasn't been washing their hands. Either that or what they are telling us is ineffective.

If you've seen the footage of Dominic Raab coughing all over the Commons today, I think it's safe to say that they've been ignoring their own advice rather than the advice being wrong.
