The old farts here will remember it well i made good money working in the shipyard in Barrow in Furness in the height of the cold war and when it ended so did thousands of jobs in the yard, looks like we could be in for round two.

Vladimir Putin announced Russia will develop new intermediate-range missiles as he pulled the country out of a Cold War-era nuclear weapons treaty – mirroring a similar move by President Trump.

“The American partners have declared that they suspend their participation in the deal, we suspend it as well,” Mr Putin said during a televised meeting with foreign and defence ministers.

“They have announced they will conduct research and development, and we will act accordingly.”

He ordered the Russian military to start work on creating new missiles, including hypersonic weapons, and told ministers not to initiate disarmament talks with Washington.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov aso accused the US of an “outright violation” of the treaty and other arms deals.

I well remember the "Cuban Missile Crisis" back in 1962.

Every Police Station had a monitor in the Main Office that normally had the volume turned down, but during the Crisis the volume was turned up to give a monotonous (but reassuring) "Beep ----- Beep ----- Beep".

This was reassuring because if it ever gave a continuous "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" then we had four minutes before the first missiles arrived; and if I was on duty, my job was to nip out on my bicycle and cycle around the town with a rattle to warn the general population to take cover, (or in American parlance "Kiss their ass goodbye!").

The thought of Trump being faced with a similar crisis is genuinely scary. It is probable that the thought of getting a President as intellectually challenged as Mr. Trump is why they started the disarmament talks all those years ago!
