OK 10ml added during the transfer - looks pretty murky at the moment

PNo I used the Starbrite on the brown (worked extremely well)

The “Accidental Lawnmower” is pretty much finished though so I’ll stick some in there tomorrow. I wish I knew the concentration of the Starbrite stuff so I could judge the dose (the new stuff is “30%”)
Not sure about the Starbrite stuff but this

suggests 2.5ml per 5 litres so your dose of 10ml looks about right. That stuff is 30% by the way

Cheers Tom

Hmmm well it's improved but still pretty hazy... I'll give it another 24h.
Might try adding a bit more of the kieselsol to a sample.

On closer inspection the Starbrite didn't work quite so well on the Brown Ale either... I'm not sure I'll be using that Lallemand 'London' again: very low flocculation

Thanks, the Duvel clone quite fiddly to make with closed pressure transfer and in bottle conditioning with fresh yeast and dextrose as well. But I think it came out perfect.
Weather not too shabby today either considering mid winter, bottling a Dubbel later after some chores.

Your moniker should be brewwithaview

Brewed a Cali Common for the first time today.
Recipe from the GH Bible:
  • 3.8kg Pale Malt (Crisp 'clear choice')
  • 1kg Vienna (BestMalz)
  • 300g Medium Crystal (Simpsons)
  • 50g Chocolate (Simpsons)
Northern Brewer (11%) 30g @70min, 5g @10, 30g @whirlpool (80ºc)
Yeast 2112 California Lager

Reading something I found about Anchor Steam, I started the mash at 60ºc for 30min and then ramped it up to 70ºc over an hour (1.5°c increase every 10min).

I was really surprised how much conversion I got from the 30min x 60ºc (pH 5.2) which reached 1.060; and the overall mash finished at 1.073 before sparging.

Unsurprisingly I overshot the target OG of 1.052 a bit 🤣 - currently filtering 3.5L of RO+DI water so I can liquor back.
I've only just pitched it so I don't think the yeast will mind.

@Buffers brewery after your very sensible observation about the clean-ability of the small 12v pumps I had a slightly closer investigation of the one I use for circulating and chilling wort.
It's actually a slightly more posh one than the beige variety I use for the hot water circuit; and to my surprise I realised that with a firm twist the whole body just unscrews for cleaning. Very clever design.

That looks less "nook and cranny" than the beige pump I used. I remember there was a very small C clip holding the rotor assembly on the shaft and a little brass bearing floating inside the rotor as well. Lots of opportunities for stuff to set up house and fester ashock1
