Hi guys

Im looking for a bit of help/idea on how i can make a brew like desperadoes

Im still a novice home brewer with a basic kit

Im hoping the idea is doable

Im thinking of starting with a mexican carveza kit, and some lime and some tequila,

But thats all i know, as for quantities or anythin im clueless

Any help with a reciepe or anything is greatly appreciated

You can take this with a pinch of salt as this is simply my best guess.

The Coopers Mexican Cerveza will be the ideal base. It has light fruity notes and the lime comes through quite nicely, because of this I wouldn't add lime. Instead, at the time of drinking, add a slice of lime to the neck of the bottle (akin to how pubs serve Corona) and pour into the glass.

For the tequila addition it's fairly minimum. Brewed to the instructions the mexican cerveza will come out at around 4-4.5%. I believe that desperados is 5.9%? It may be a bit ham fisted but I would simply add the required amount of tequila in order to hit the same figure.

So, here comes the boring maths part....

Let's say the tequila you are using is 40% ABV
Let's say the coopers kit comes out 4.5% ABV after priming

In order to increase 23L by 1.4% abv 0.322L of alcohol needs to be added (23/100*1.4). As tequila is only 40% ABV this volume works out to be 0.805L (0.322*100/40).

The only trouble is that you will now have a volume of 23.805L so the calculation doesn't quite work out to be 5.9%ABV. This is easily sorted out though....

5.9*23/23.805 = Actual ABV = 5.7%

A quick spreadsheet calculator with on the fly calculations tells me that in order to hit the wanted 5.9% ABV you will need to add 0.95L of tequila.

For the sake of argument, and assuming that the coopers is going to be under the required ABV anyway, I would chuck in a 1L bottle :)

It's a slow night so I decided to figure out the equation to work out the required volume of an alcohol addition. Fairly easy though, just fire in your figures and this will work out how much to add.

Starting volume - 23L
Starting ABV - 4.5%
Additional ABV - 40%
Required total ABV - 5.9%
Required volume - ???

Additional ABV*Required Volume - Required Total ABV*Required Volume = Starting Volume*Required Total ABV-Starting volume*Starting ABV

40%*Required volume - 5.9%*Required Volume = 23*5.9% - 23*4.5%
0.4*Required volume - 0.059*Required volume = 1.357 - 1.035
0.341*Required volume = 0.322
Required volume = 0.322/0.341
Required volume = 0.944L

Proving:

23*4.5% = 1.035L
0.944*40% = 0.3776L
Total volume = 23.944
Total alcohol = 1.4126
Alcohol % = 100/total volume*total alcohol = 5.8996%
