Tank Stat

Anyone see any reason why one of these TANK STAT cant be used to control the temp of an HLT. They just sit on the surface of your domestic hot water tank and are just held in place by a strap. You have no need to drill holes for probes etc. Simple two wire set up which I assume just breaks the live to the element??.

looks ok but would it be accurate enough. Pids are around a tenner and a probe and i think would give a very accurate temp. it is similar to the stats on the electrim buckets and they were inaccurate

I'm thinking for people like me who don't want to get into complex wiring of PID, SSR and the like. This could be calibrated with a thermometer so once set it would be accurate ie set temp on Stat so it cuts out when thermometer reads desired temp. Once done should be ok from then on.

Sounds like it may work with some double checking of temps? It may not be that accurate each time you brew though? Also be wary of the fact you now have live wires half way up your Hlt and possible not very waterproof connections?

i wired a pid for the first time the ther day, abolute doddle to do. only thing i need to do is house it now.

I looked at that option, but domestic hot water tanks are not supposed to boil so the thermostats only go up to about 80c or so. So you would need to disconnect the stat to get it to boil.

The hysteresis on mechanical themostats is a bit... pants. And also depends on ambient temperature.

Mine trips at 78 in the summer and 86 in the winter.

Or you could try one of these, no need for SSR's as they switch 30 amps.
