Yes buy the bottles with beer in, and while the quality or mass of glass used in bottles used for selling beers in has dropped over the years, if they can with hold the pressure of a fully conditioned beer mid summer they will hold fine as long as you bottle when primary has completed and you dont over prime. With glass bottles i always cover the bottles with a towel in a plastic box when conditioning just in case of a priming slip..

And as the collection grows, It wont take long if you let a few pals know and they pitch in too use cheap pet bottles as a stop gap

However they will be a tad more fragile empty but you wont be chucking them about either.. regardless of how you source bottles crates are useful for keeping the collection safe.

I am looking for some swing top bottles for my test brew. I Found some 1litre swing tops from IKEA at £1.90 ... But I don't think they'd be able to take any kind of pressure.

I don't mind paying the £20 for 12x500ml or 8x750ml swing tops, but the 1litre sounds a little easier to store, y'know.

Since you're probably going to use them for a longer time, it's no use trying to save a few pennies per bottle. And for the price IKEA is charging, I'd be surprised if these weren't at least of the same quality.
Unless you really really REALLY want 1L bottles.

I got some from the Range a couple of weeks back and the rubber definitely came off and could be replaced.

I`m so glad I live here when it comes to bottles .

My basement is completely stashed with beer bottle crates. Normal cap bottles, swing top bottles, small and large.
Average price was 3,50 quid per crate filled with empty bottles.

You can get decent swing top bottles from The Range for £12.99 for a box of 12. Sometimes they have them on special for a tenner.

Just checked my bottles as they have now conditioned. The rubber on my bottles is definitely part of the cap - they must have changed the design at some point. Not sure whether these are the new or old version, but would probably not buy these again unless they have the separate rubbers.

Are you willing to pay "3 fur a fiver" on bottles that are of an unknown quality at £1.66 per bottle? Or are you willing to pay £17 for 12 bottles or £1.41 per bottle on bottles that are of a known quality?

All my swing tops came used, either from beer I bought or from bought second hand (25-40p per bottle). Got about 100L worth at the moment and never had any problem with them, even after accidentally overcarbing them.

Not saying you shouldn't buy new if you want to, I just wouldn't fear the bottles (they have at least been tested once xD)

Like all things German, the quality of their commercial swing top bottles are very good. I have some Hacker Pschorr ones that I use a lot. Last night I acquired some Flensburger ones from my local Wetherspoon and they are really good quality - Only 330ml but they will do for my Dubbel in a couple of months.

I use Franziskaner bottles and some Hacker bottles. My parents brought me some beer from Germany and I noticed that the bottles used for local sales tend to be much thicker than those I bought. Transport cost savings :)
