Hi all,

I've signed up just to say that this thread has been very helpful.

My fav so far must be:

1 ltr Asda WGJ
1 ltr lemon / lime (tropicana)
~800g white sugar
Youngs wine Yeast
Pectolase.

10 days bubbling then put into plastic 2 ltr bottles, 50/50 with lemonade. nom nom nom :)

Currently Asda WGJ is coming out quite red....
not sure if anyone else has noticed?

I made two DJ's of wgj and apple/raspberry at the weekend and the asda wgj was the usual colour.
You found white grape Juice:shock: I have not found any around here for about 2 months

I also found this last year - Has anyone else found there seems to be a lack of supply at this time of year ?

White grape juice stocks have been hit and miss at supermarkets for ages, i just ordered on-line and found Asda own brande "chosen by you" white grape juice was available and i got 8 litres plus 8 litres of apple/raspberry.

Asda in Leicester has it 99% of the time.
Saying that i bought the last 4 cartons this morning. but the one i used for this batch looks red in colour. I'm sure i'm not imagining it as i have 2 other DJ's on the go and they look the usual yellow colour during ferment.

It was the Adsa one, same as the pic you posted.
It came out a rusty colour instead of the yellow wee type colour it usually is. Tasted ok so not contaminated.

The DJ has only been on for 2 or 3 days so i'll report back.

Or maybe they are cutting WGJ with cheap red...
I have 3 more cartons left from the same stock but no free DJ. Next time i open one i'll post a pic if it's the same.

I like to use WGJ as a base for fruit wine recipes - adds a good amount of body to what can otherwise be a bit of a let down..

This one is my favourite.

10kg Strawberries
15 limes (juice only)
10 lemons (juice only)
15 litres of WGJ
5 teaspoons of pectolase
pint of strong tea
Champagne yeast and nutrient
5 campdens

Mash it all together, and hit with the campden.

Leave for 24 hours and pitch yeast.

Ferment on the pulp for a week.

Strain and ferment again in a bucket for 4 weeks.

Rack to carboy and top up with WGJ to the top.

Age until clear.

Then bottle in Champagne bottles primed with sugar.

Makes a truly incredible sparkling strawberry wine!

nice oneChippy_Tea the last one looks like what i need :)

Hi all,

Planning on having a go at one of the supermarket juice wines listed previously, not sure which one as of yet but started buying the ingredients. Today I purchased the following from Wilkinson as this seems to be the place to get bits from:-

Pectolase
Express wine yeast compound
Stabiliser

Planning on getting Glycerine from Asda.

Regarding the express wine yeast compound, is it the right one.?

When I watched the video there was 2 different types used but couldn't see the description properly.? I know 1 was yeast nutrient.

Can someone please point me in the right direction to what else I need, apart from the sugar, tannin and fruit juices.

Cheers

Darren

Hi all,Darren

Pectolase
Express wine yeast compound
Stabiliser
Glycerine .
sugar,
tannin use 3 tea bags and make a strong black tea

for the yeast use any wine yeast eg. youngs super wine yeast compound or GV1 universal wine yeast. the one u said will work fine tbh. thats all you need.

hope it helps
:hat:

I have never heard of the express yeast but if its wine yeast it'll do the job, i use youngs super wine yeast compound (i think that's also what he uses in the video) and have never had a stuck fermentation even in winter with no heat pads/belts on the DJ's.

Yeast Nutrient gives nourishment to your yeast so that it stays healthy throughout the fermentation process.

For tannin use a mug of strong black tea with a few bags in it, stir it regularly as you put all the other stuff together.

You have not mentioned steriliser, i use milton tablets, 15 minute contact time and no rinse which saves a lot of messing about.

You also need a second DJ to rack into for clearing, degassing and stabilising and a racking cane to transfer the wine between both.

You need campden tablets and wine stabiliser for finishing the wine and finings to clear it (i use KwiK Clear)

Thanks for the reply, I got the sterilizing powder from Wilkos and have used that with great success on previous brews.

Also got a second DJ, and the siphon equipment, hydrometer, thermometer, stabiliser.

Need to get Camden tablets and finings tomorrow.

The express wine yeast compound is again from Wilkos and suitable for all wine recipes, well so it says. Just curious as to do I need to add a yeast nutrient as well.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

Darren
